BASIC PRINCIPLES
AND CONCEPTS
CLIMATE
CHANGE
“A change of climate which is attributed
directly or indirectly to human activity that
alters the composition of the global
atmosphere which is in addition to natural
climate variability observed over a
comparable period of time.” “Any change in climate over time,
whether due to natural variability or as
- United Nations Framework Convention on a result of human activity.”
Climate Change (UNFCCC)
- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC)
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Drought in Caceres, Spain

Drought in Dinosaur Valley State Park,

Typhoon Florita Flooding
Texas, USA

All these happened in

Ice blankets in Rhone Glacier, Switzerland
August 2022
CLIMATE WEATHER
o The average weather in a given
o Conditions at one particular time
area over a longer period of time
and time, including temperature
o Influenced by slow changes in
and rainfall
the ocean, the land, the earth or
o Can change very rapidly from
about of the sun, and the energy
day to day and from year to year
output of the sun
o Changes involve shifts in
o Fundamentally controlled by the
temperatures, rainfall, winds and
balance of energy of the earth
clouds
and its atmosphere
WEATHER refers to short term
atmospheric conditions while
CLIMATE is the weather of a
specific region averaged over a
long period of time
—US Geological Survey
CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Natural Factors Human Factors

Volcano Solar Natural Greenhouse Aerosols Land Use

Variability Gases
GREENHOUSE
EFFECT
The rise in global temperature due to the
process by which the gases in the
atmosphere trap the heat coming from
the sun that is re-radiated by the Earth’s
surface and re-emit it downwards

Because of how they warm our world,

these gases are referred to as
greenhouse gases

CLIMATE CHANGE
What is a HAZARD?
A dangerous phenomenon, substance,
human activity or condition that may cause
loss of life, injury or other health impacts,
property damage, loss of livelihoods and
services, social and economic disruption or
environmental damage
TYPES OF HAZARD

NATURAL HAZARDS
o Hydrometeorological Hazards
o Geological Hazards

MAN-MADE
HAZARDS
HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL HAZARDS

Strong wind and Rain-induced

Flood Storm Surge Landslide
GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS

Sinkhole Liquefaction Ground Rupture

GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS

Earthquake Tsunami Volcanic Eruption

MAN-MADE HAZARDS

Pollution Fire Incidence Conflicts

Why is the Philippines most at
risk country?
7,641
Number of Philippine Islands as of May 2022
– Archipelagic country
Therefore making the
country susceptible to
flooding, storm surges
70%
and geological Cities and municipalities are in coastal areas
hazards

300
Approximate number of volcanoes
– Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire
Aggravating factors why the
Philippines is hazard-prone

Siltation of Clogging of
Deforestation waterways and
rivers and
streams poor drainage

04 05
Poor selection of Improper construction
settlement areas of houses and
buildings

RESPONSES TO
CLIMATE CHANGE
MITIGATION
Refers to efforts to reduce or prevent emission
of greenhouse gases. Mitigation can mean
using new technologies and renewable
energies, making older equipment more
energy efficient, or changing management
practices or consumer behavior
—UN Environment Programme
ADAPTATION
Altering our behavior, systems, and – in some
cases – ways of life to protect our families, our
economies, and the environment in which we live
from the impacts of climate change. The more we
reduce emissions right now, the easier it will be to
adapt to the changes we can no longer avoid
—World Wild Life
