Russia foreign policy:
- Collapse of Soviet union : 10 years of chaos affecting the population, the dominant
narrative was that Russia would become like Western countries and become a
capitalist liberal democracy
- Russia was mapped by Putin as an anti-western superpower, giving its pride back to
the people.
- Russia’s inferiority complex towards Europe
- Russia’s continuous sought of respect from western countries
- Russia wants to be feared by NATO and all elite European countries
- National security
NATO:
- Believes it is representing a significant force in the international political arena
- Nato’s legitimacy compromised
- NATO’s only justifiable reason for its presence is to contain Russia: therefore
they need tensions with Russia to continue to prove that they are an asset to
the world.
- US policymakers and nato have different interests
