CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Think about how distraught and frustrated we are with ourselves when we got poor scores
or fail a subject. The only thing that can help us cope with this is to use our phones. Most
teachers are upset with us if we obtain bad scores; they frequently accuse us of being
irresponsible and lazy for not studying thoroughly enough to pass the test or for not giving an
activity our best effort. which is simply making it worse and making it difficult for us to
emotionally accept it. Some students may appear to be unconcerned, but they actually care; they
are simply accustomed to it because we simply have no idea what to do when we don't grasp
something. This chapter begins with a brief background on the aspects influencing senior high
school students' academic performance at Data Center College of the Philippines, Laoag. The
purpose of this study is to identify the students' perceived causes of academic failure. The
statement of the problem, the significance of the study, the methodology, the scope and
limitations, and the definition of terms are all presented in this chapter. In Data Center College of
the Philippines, Laoag, a specific sort of academic failure was the focus of this study. A specific
goal of the experiment was to determine if the issue was primarily caused by the non-competing
students' personal traits or whether institutional circumstances related to their own lives
contributed to their failure.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Nile (2006)

Pointed out that there is a weakness among the students of the main stages in language
skills, and confirms the reality of this weakness of students in key stages of the delay in the
mastery of reading and writing skills, as well as weaknesses in the skills of writing the alphabet
and calligraphy.

Aremu (2003)

The concept of academic failure can be defined as a stop of attempting because of the
fear of committing errors, however, trying to achieve a goal can be considered a success even if
it was less than expected. Identifies poor academic performance as a performance that is
adjudged by the examiner and some other significant as falling below an expected standard. He
also stresses that academic failure is not only frustrating to the pupils and the parents, its effects
are equally crucial on the society in terms of lack of manpower in all fields of the economy and
politics.

Ahmed & Wias (2012)

Did a study to examine the reasons for the low level of academic achievement among
high school students from teachers and students perspective; the study showed these reasons,
including the large number of distractions around the student like the spread of mobile phone,
means fun, low motivation of students towards learning and the weakness of the attention of
parents to follow up the level of their children. The study recommended minimizing the
distractions of attention, to concentrate on motivation, to strengthen the work of students in
science subjects by giving them more courses and to provide them with modern teaching
methods that are in line with the tremendous scientific advances.

(Dornbusch, Glasgow, and Lin 1996; Rosenbaum, DeLuca, and Miller 1999)

Adolescence entails dramatic changes in behavioral expectations, opportunities, and

consequences. As one example, schools become more differentiated, cumulative, and
competitive, which increases the risk of academic failure as well as its long-term consequences

(Dewa and Lin 2000)

Often lost in this inquiry, however, is consideration of physical and mental health
problems for academic performance in secondary school. The relative lack of attention to health
is unfortunate given that related literatures strongly suggest the possibility that health problems
disrupt academic functioning. For example, research on adult populations has shown that mental
and physical health problems negatively affect work performance

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The aim of the study is how to perceived causes of academic failure among senior high
school students of Data center college of the Philippines. As there are initial observations that are
related to the study, the researchers wanted to gather more data to the participants, especially
students who are involved. The researchers ensure in answering to the following question:

1. Does everyone in the class lack the self-awareness necessary to implement significant
changes?

2. What are the common causes of academic failure in Data Center College of Laoag
last school year, 2021 – 2022?
5

3. If students struggled academically, did they indicate any signs of depression?

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study focuses on the Perceived causes of academic failure among Senior High
School Student's. The respondent of the study shall have male and female of grade 12 students.
At Data Center College of the Philippines, Senior High School Campus at Farinas street M.V.
Santa Angela (Poblacion) Barangay 9, 2900 Laoag Ilocos Norte S/Y 2022-2023 will be the site
of this investigation.

The other students who did not graduate from Data Center College of the Philippines,
Laoag in grade 12 last year are not included in the scope of this research. The respondents will
get a survey and a reference questionnaire as part of the study. The researchers' method will
allow them to ascertain the reasons why Senior High School students fail their academics as well
as the number of pupils that failed last S/Y 2021–2022. In order to address the issue of how to
recover, the researchers are trying to determine why students failed the class. This and the next
school years' teachers, parents, and students will all be able to use the study's findings. The
questionnaire that the researchers have created will be the primary source of the data.

FIGURE 1: A Conceptual Model Representing the Conceptual Framework of the Study

This study's conceptual framework demonstrates the connections between the various
common factors that senior high school students may experience that contribute to their
academic failure. In the first graphic, the common reasons are the independent variable, while
the academic failure of senior high school pupils is the dependent variable. Early on in your
research process, it is critical to pinpoint other factors that might have an impact on how your
independent and dependent variables relate to one another. We only have two boxes in our
conceptual model because of this.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

From this study, the students have learned about the issues with failing grades of the
pupils and how their academic performance would effect their own lives, which is why we
shouldn't ignore our obligations to attend school. Additionally, we must keep in mind that the
results of this study may apply to all of our subjects, so we must do an excellent job of studying.
Academic failure or senior high school dropouts are seen as not only a personal concern but also
a significant social issue, and some fundamental steps should be taken to address this issue
because the problems it generates will have an impact on society in the future. Having firsthand
knowledge of failing grades is incredibly beneficial. It entirely changes our mental state by

inducing pain. It causes us to consider the true nature of things and their significance in our lives,
with the most significance placed on changing and bettering our future selves. Students thought
that lack of desire, interest in their subject of study, and lack of confidence were the main causes
of their academic failure. That information can be used to prevent future failures that might
otherwise cause as much suffering. Failure-related learning cannot be replaced. The findings of
this study will help us understand the importance of studying hard because it will effect our
future.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

ACADEMIC FAILURE: is one of the issues that certain students at Data Center College of the
Philippines Laoag to deal with. In order to prevent this issue, students must concentrate on their
studies. It speaks of the interactions between students. The students that failed their academic
subjects at Data Center College of the Philippines Laoag are the focus of this investigation. The
number of Data Center students who failed is known according to this study. The Data Center
College of the Philippines during the most recent academic year, 2021–2022, is the subject of
this study. The study's final finding is that some students are aware of how crucial it is to
