LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
MATHEMATICS 9
Quarter 2 Week 2

Name______________________________________ Section_______________

L I. LEARNING SKILLS

At the end of the learning activity sheet, I can:

1. illustrate situations that involves joint and combined variation
2. translate into variation statement a relationship between two quantities given by a
mathematical equation and vice versa.
3. solve problems involving joint and combined variation

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

LESSON 1: ILLUSTRATING, TRANSLATING AND SOLVING JOINT VARIATION

Definition: Joint Variation

Joint Variation consist of three or more quantities or variables with

𝒂
the statement “a varies jointly as b and c” means 𝒂 𝒌𝒃𝒄, or 𝒌 , where k
𝒃𝒄
is the constant of variations.

How can you now translate joint variations? How can you determine if the
statement is a direct or joint variation? How can we find the constant of variation in
joint variation? Understand the following examples to answer these questions.

Example 1 The area (A) of the wall to be painted varies jointly to the number of
workers (w) and the pail (p) of paints needed to do the task.

Answer: where k is a constant of variation.

Example 2 The appropriate length S of a rectangular beam varies jointly as the

square of width w and the square root of its depth d.

Answer: √

Solution Discussion

Solve for the constant variation and simplify

Solve for the value of and substitute the result in

the constant variation.

Example 5 A tricycle used approximately 25 liters on a 50-kilometer trip at 40

km/hr. How many liters will it use on a 100-kilometer trip at 65 km/hr?

Solution Discussion
Write the given and its unknown
25 liters-gasoline
50 km-1st distance
40 km/hr-1st rate

100 km- 2nd distance

65 km/hr- 2nd rate
Find:
k – constant variation

Translate into mathematical statement
Use the information given in the problem to find the
constant of variation k.

Solve for the second gasoline in liters consumed and

( )
substitute the result in the constant variation.

liters Consumed gasoline

LESSON 2: ILLUSTRATING, TRANSLATING AND SOLVING COMBINED
VARIATION

Definition: Combined Variation

Combined Variation describes a situation where a variable depends

on two or more other variables which involves both varies directly with some
of them and varies inversely with others.
𝒌𝒙
The statement “z varies directly as x and inversely as y” means 𝒛
𝒚
𝒚𝒛
or 𝒌 , where k is the constant of variation.
𝒙

One important thing to easily get this lesson is that you will recall the past lessons on
direct, inverse, and joint variations. Study the given examples below and try to compare it
with the previous lessons in variation.

The number of days D needed to paint a wall varies directly as the

Example 1 width w of the wall and varies inversely as the number of people n
painting. Translate the statement into mathematical equation using k as
the constant of variation.

Given: Let D = number of days

w = width
n = number of people
k = constant variation

Answer:

Example 2 The heat (H) produced an electric lamp varies jointly as the resistance (r)
and inversely proportional to the cube of the current (c).

Answer:

Note: the “cube” means the exponent is 3.

Example 3 If varies directly as and inversely as , and when and

, find when and .

5
Solution Discussion
Write the given and its unknown which is the
constant variation

Find:

Translate into mathematical statement

Solve for the constant variation

Multiply both by the denominator four (4)

Simplify
Solve for the value of and substitute the result in
the constant variation by using the original equation.

Multiply both sides by six (6)

Divide both sides by 2

The number of days needed to paint the wall varies directly as the width
Example 4
of the wall and inversely as the number of people painting on it. It takes 6
days for 3 persons to paint the 9 - meter width of the wall. How many
days will it take 4 persons to paint the 18 - meter width of the wall?

Solution Discussion
Write the given and its unknown
6 = days (d) needed to paint
the wall
9 = 1st width (w) of the wall
3 = 1st number (n) of people
18 = 2nd width (w) of the wall
4 = 2nd number (n) of people

6
Find:
k = constant variation
? = days needed to paint by
the four (4) persons.
Translate mathematical statement into
mathematical equation
Use the information given in the problem to find
the constant variation (k).

Multiply both sides by three (3)

Simplify
Solve for the second gasoline in liters consumed
and substitute the result in the constant
variation.

Days needed to paint by the four (4) persons.

III. ACTIVITIES

mathematical equation.

__________1. The current c varies jointly as the electromotive force e and the resistance r.
__________2. The acceleration a of an object varies directly as the force f exerted and
inversely as its mass m.
__________3. The stiffness s of a beam varies directly as its depth d and inversely as the
square of the length l.

and inversely as the cube of the distance d between them.

PRACTICE TASK 2

Solve the following problems. Use extra sheet of paper if needed.

1. If varies directly as and inversely as , and =36 when =9 and =3, find y
when x=25 and =15.

2. Suppose m varies jointly as n and p. If m=20 when n=4 and p=3, what is m when
n=2 and p=3?
