1.1

Please list at least 3 research methods you have used on the course so far?

 Using the internet to find information

 Group discussion
 Experimenting with software – finding out what works

1.1

What is qualitive research?

 Qualitive research deals with words and meaning. Is used for subjective
 Qualitative data can help us to understand why, how, or what happened behind certain
behaviours
 Interpretation-based, descriptive, and relating to language

What is quantitative research?

 Quantitative research deals with numbers and statistics. Is used for objective
 Quantitative data tells us how many, how much, or how often in calculations.
 Numbers-based, countable, or measurable

What is primary research?

 Primary research is when the researcher is actively involved. The researcher may collect
information first-hand through surveys, focus groups, interviews, observations and experiments.
 Essentially, the person who obtains the data.

What is secondary research?

 Secondary research is when the researcher creates a summary or synthesis of data. These
researchers use and analyse primary research sources.
 Essentially, the person that looks though existing data.

Identify at least 3 elements you would need to build an “audience profile” for one of the media products
you have created on the course so far? (Horror Film Poster / Lost Short Film / Blair With Trailer Project)

 Age: teens and up, but not 30+ (one study says 15 - 25 another says 18 – 29)
 Interests: fans of the horror genre
 Gender: men more than women (but only by a small margin)
…This is what studies show

Looking at the projects above pick one communication method and skill that you have
used in more than one project, compare how you have used them differently.

 Use of camera
For the short film “Lost” we created our own storyboards so we had to make decisions how
to film certain scenes, whereas for “The Blair Witch Trailer Project” we were attempting to
recreate the original trailer as best we can, so we tried to film the shots as similar as
possible.

2.2

This time focusing on THE BLAIR WITCH TRAILER PROJECT ONLY how successful do you feel you used
the following communication methods and skills? Provide one example below for each of the following
methods and skills.

Use of camera
We followed the shots of the original trailer faithfully.

Use of editing
We edited the footage to replicate the look of the original trailer.

Use of sound (Music/ dialogue/effects)

I layered sounds to make the audio more complex. e.g., dialogue, eerie music and forest ambient sound.

Narrative
The trailer explains the premise of the story very clearly using text, speaking (news reporter, interviewer,
film student) and visuals (clips from the missing student’s documentary, etc).

Writing skills (Scripts/synopsis/questionaries/surveys/taglines/evaluations)

We typed up the script – following that of the original but with some edits. On the website there is a
synopsis of the movie. The Tagline is the same as one of the originals - “Everything you’ve heard is true.”

Research Skills (Secondary research of short films)

I used the internet find the original poster of The Blair Witch Project movie and I used the same tagline.
“Everything you’ve heard is true” is a very eye-catching tagline and feeds into the audience’s speculation
of the movie being non-fiction.

Looking at all of the above please answer the following:

What worked well?

I learnt a few things from making mistakes and now I know not to do them again. The trailer turned out
pretty well but it did need some final tweaking.

What would you do differently and why?

I would save my work to the globe, I can say that at least. I am just glad that the teacher saw most of the
trailer before it was lost.

(The teacher is going to write a witness statement)
