ZENITH

The zenith is an imaginary

point directly "above" a
particular location, on the
imaginary celestial sphere.
"Above" means in the
vertical direction (plumb
line) opposite to the gravity
direction at that location
(nadir).

AZIMUTH

Along the horizon line.

Movement along the sun.
The azimuth is the angle
formed between a reference
direction (in this example
north) and a line from the
observer to a point of
interest projected on the
same plane as the reference
direction orthogonal to the
zenith.
ALTITUDE

Also known as depth is a

distance measurement,
usually in the vertical or "up"
direction, between a
reference datum and a point
or object. The exact
definition and reference
datum varies according to
the context.

HORIZON

The apparent line that

separates the surface of a
celestial body from its sky
when viewed from the
perspective of an observer
on or near the surface of the
relevant body.

SOLSTICE
EQUINOX
SEANONAL VARIATION
OF SOLAR RADIATION
SUMMER SOLSTICE (JUNE 21)

June Solstice: Northern Hemisphere tilts

towards the sun; summer begins in
northern hemisphere; winter begins in
southern hemisphere.

WINTER SOLSTICE (DECEMBER 21)

December Solstice: Northern Hemisphere
tilts away from the sun; winter begins in
northern hemisphere; summer begins in
southern hemisphere.

MARCH EQUINOX (MARCH 21)

(Vernal Equinox) Equator faces sun

directly; neither poles tilts toward sun; all
regions on earth experience 12 hours of
daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

SEPTEMBER EQUINOX (SEPTEMBER 21)

(Autumnal Equinox) Equator faces sun

directly; neither poles tilts toward sun; all
regions on earth experience 12 hours of
daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

TYPES OF WINDS
• LOCAL WINDS
• PREVAILING WINDS
• PERIODIC WINDS
LOCAL WINDS
• Frequently encountered
• Blows in any direction

PREVAILING WINDS
• Blows from the same direction
• Also called permanent winds,
• Divide into: Trade winds, Anti trade
winds, Polar winds

PERIODIC WINDS
• Seasonal
• Monsoon winds
• Blows from water bodies to land

WIND ROSE
that illustrates wind direction &
speed, measured at weather
stations. To be more particular, it
shows the possibility of every
direction of the wind and its
strength. Wind roses are also
taken into account in the
construction of runways of
airports, highways, the layout of
settlements (orientation of
buildings and streets), and many
WIND ROSE other economic tasks in
The wind rose is a vector diagram, agronomy, forestry, parks,
presented in a circular format, ecology, and others.
