Question 1: Friction [21]

A 20 kg box shown in Figure 1 contains 16 guns, each gun has a mass of 5 kg.
The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the block and the inclined
plane are 0.30 and 0.20, respectively.

Figure 1: Box containing guns

1.1. Draw the free-body diagram of the box shown in Figure 1, and indicate all forces (06)
acting on it.
1.2. Calculate the friction force F acting on the block when P is applied with a (06)
magnitude of 200 N to the block at rest and state its direction.
1.3. Calculate the force P required to initiate motion up the incline from rest, and (06)

1.4. Determine the friction force F acting on the block if P = 600 N. (03)

Question 2: Motion in the vertical plane [06]

A military missile is projected vertically upwards with an initial velocity of 60 m/s.

Four seconds later a second missile is also projected vertically upwards from
the same point and with the same initial velocity. Calculate:
2.1. The maximum height reached by each missile, (02)
2.2. The time is taken to reach maximum height, and (02)
2.3. The time for each missile to return to the point of projection. (02)
