Introduction This part gives you technical data for Climate Controller ACUE 3000.

General ACUE 3000 is a microprocessor based control unit intended to regulate and control the
temperature in telecom shelters. The Control Unit is primary using free cooling, but can
also manage an external cooling unit if installed.
The unit is made in two versions, for 24V DC or 48V DC supply voltage.
The unit can control up to four fans, using 0-10V communication protocol.
The unit has outputs for one cooling unit and one electrical heater. It is also equipped
with two separate outputs for damper control.
The controller can be configured to use a Temperature Compensation function, TC
function. TC function means that a recycling damper opens, or some fans are stopped,
to mix the intake air with room tempered air or to circulate the air internally in the shel-
ter.
A function is available for sensing 230V AC Mains power failure,. The Setpoint cooling is
increased during AC Mains failure to save battery power. There is also a function to
shutdown controller when battery supply voltage drops. The controller will restart au-
tomatically when battery supply voltage rises to normal.
A timer function creates a good working climate in the shelter for a limited time.
An indoor temperature sensor must be connected. There is an option to connect an
outdoor temperature sensor.
The controller can be configured for slave operation.
All configurations and settings are executed from the menu interface.
A self-test routine is integrated in the controller.

Functional description

Cooling ACUE 3000 can be configured to work with or without an external AC unit. An outdoor
temperature sensor must be installed when AC unit is used.

Installation: Free Selection of free cooling or AC unit

cooling or AC unit

ACUE 3000 chooses between free cooling or AC unit depending on the outdoor temper-
ature and the parameter ”setpoint cooling”. If the outdoor temperature is lower than
setpoint cooling -3°C then free cooling mode is selected.
If the outdoor temperature rises higher than setpoint cooling -3°C then the AC mode is
initiated. The AC mode is maintained until the outdoor temperature falls below setpoint
cooling -4°C
The AC mode is initiated if the indoor temperature rises abnormally during free cooling
If the indoor temperature gets abnormally high during free cooling operation, even if
outdoor temperature is sufficient, ACUE 3000 switch over to AC mode for safety cool-
ing. (This can happen when the filter is worn out or at fans malfunction.)
Outdoor temperature sensor must be installed when AC unit is installed. Otherwise free
cooling will never be activated.
ACUE 3000 will never initiate AC mode if no AC unit is installed.

Free cooling without Free cooling is used when outdoor temperature has enough cooling capacity (see figure
AC unit installed below) or always if no AC unit is installed.

Free cooling is regulated with a PI-regulator. The P-band is adjustable in the menu but
I-time is fixed. When the PI-regulator has regulated the temperature below Setpoint
cooling – P-band it is blocked (fans turned off and dampers closed). The regulator re-
mains blocked until temperature exceeds Setpoint cooling again.
If motorized dampers are installed the fans have a start-up delay allowing the dampers
to open before operation.

14
Free cooling with AC Disregard this section if no AC unit is installed!
unit installed AC mode is initiated if the outdoor temperature is too warm to cool down the room to

en
desired temperature.

Free cooling is regulated with a PI-regulator. The P-band is adjustable in the menu but
I-time is fixed in software. When the PI-regulator has regulated the temperature below
Setpoint cooling – P-band it is blocked (fans turned off and dampers closed). The regu-
lator remains blocked until temperature exceeds Se tpoint cooling again.

If the indoor temperature gets abnormally high during free cooling operation, even if
outdoor temperature is sufficient, ACUE 3000 switch over to AC mode (if AC unit is in-
stalled).
The AC mode will be initiated at Setpoint cooling + Pband + 3°C. There will be a 3 min
start up delay before the AC mode can be restarted.
Emergency Cooling will be started four minutes after the indoor temperature exceeds
Setpoint cooling + 6°C.
ACUE 3000 will run the free cooling at max. installed speed and run the AC unit at the
same time.
When ACUE 3000 returns to free cooling a new switch to AC mode is blocked for 3
minutes.
If the outdoor temperature indicates that free cooling is to be used at start-up (after
power down) a switch to AC mode is blocked for 3 minutes. This precaution is taken
because the fans needs some time to achieve cooling effect, and to be noticed on the
indoor temperature sensor.
If motorized dampers are installed the fans have a start-up delay allowing the dampers
to open before operation.

The AC unit is started when indoor temperature exceeds Setpoint Cooling. The unit then
remains active until it has cooled down the room below Setpoint Cooling – Diff. Temp.
AC.
If indoor temperature exceeds Setpoint Cooling + 6°C an AC unit malfunction is as-
sumed. At this point the fan is started at maximum speed for emergency cooling.
The fan remains active until the temperature falls below Setpoint Cooling + 5°C.
The emergency cooling is always blocked for 4 minutes when AC mode is initiated, to
give the AC some time to operate.
The AC unit has a 3 minutes start-up delay (counted from time for latest turn off).
Inactive AC unit is exercised for 5 minutes every 10 days.

Heating ACUE 3000 regulates a relay output for electrical heater start/stop.

The heater can be configured as externally or internally mounted.

Externally mounted means that a radiator is regulated on/off as described in figure
above. In this mode the fan is turned off.
Internally mounted heater means that the heater is built-in inside the free cooling unit.
This requires that TC-function is installed and that motorized dampers are used. In this
mode the exhaust dampers are closed and the TC-function is active (TC-function
means that a recycling damper opens or that some of the fans stops allowing internal
air recycling). The fans (not TC-fans) operates at 15% speed to circulate an even air
steam over the heating element (e.g. heat stick). The heating element is regulated as
described in above figure.

16
When internal heater is turned off, the fan(s) will always remain active for additional 2
minutes in order to cool down the heating element.

en
Temperature Com- Temperature Compensation Function, TC-function means that ACUE 3000 has the pos-
pensation function sibility to mix intake and exhaust air, or to circulate pure indoor air, by turning of some
(TC-function) fans (TC-fans) or by open a recycling damper.
The recycling damper output is always activated when TC-function is installed. Howev-
er, the number of fans used as TC-fans must be entered in menu. The number of TC-
fans can be set 0-3.
During free cooling operation TC-function is used to prevent too cold supply air at low
outdoor temperatures (see below figure).

TC-function is mandatory when internal heater is installed, see Heating section.

The TC-function is activated from the menu.

Exhaust dampers ACUE 3000 is equipped with an output for regulation of exhaust dampers. These damp-
ers are opened when free cooling is active. The fans have a start-up delay allowing ex-
haust dampers to open before fan signal is released.

AC Mains failure de- ACUE 3000 is equipped with an input for AC Mains failure detection. This input is acti-
tection (230V AC) vated from the menu.
When AC Mains failure is detected, ACUE 3000 only allow free cooling operation. All
other operations are inhibited. The indoor temperature setpoint is raised (setpoint at
line failure) to save battery power.

Supply voltage sens- ACUE 3000 continuously measure the supply voltage, 24V DC or 48V DC. The function
ing (24V DC or 48V “Stop at low voltage” can be activated from the menu. Once activated all operations will
DC) be stopped when supply voltage decrease below a defined level.
ACUE 3000 allows operation again when supply voltage has increased a defined number
of volts (hysteresis).

17
Timer function for ACUE 3000 is equipped with a timer function to be used during service and mainte-
service personnel nance.
The function is initiated through the menu. Press UP button and press ENTER button,
By activating the timer function a pleasant climate can be achieved for service duties for
a limited time. (preset to for example 20 minutes).
The heater setpoint is automatically set to +20°C during timer function. The fans are al-
lowed to work at maximum 40% of max. speed setting. Heater and AC unit will work as
during normal operation.
Timer function is inhibited when indoor temperature exceeds the setting for High Temp.
Alarm - 3°C.
Timer function is automatically stopped when the preset time have passed, and the unit
will return to normal operation. Time left is shown in display.

Slave mode (PLC) ACUE 3000 can be configured to work in slave-mode. This means that the free cooling
unit is regulated by an external 0-10V signal.

The following features are NOT supported when acting as slave:

• AC unit
• Heater
• Temperature alarms (no room sensor required)
All other normal features are supported

Protocol ACUE 3000 uses the MODBUS RTU protocol.

Each unit must have a unique ID number (1-247). The ID number can be changed in the
menu, see Configurations and settings.
The following MODBUS function codes are valid:
• Read Holding Registers (03h)
• Preset Single Register (06h)
All other codes will result in error response (01h, Illegal function).

ACUE 3000 A04 Manual revision

Document Tomas Uusitalo 2013-08-12

This document lists the changes from standard ACUE 3000 controller.

Hardware changes New potential free output for controlling of second AC unit is required to opperate 2 AC units.
This is NOT included unles otherwise noted. Same electrical data as for first AC output.
Software changes

Info  The new v4 software adds support for two A/C units and a new control
strategy.
The software can also be used in the standard ACUE controller.

Menu handling  All parameters except “Setpoint cooling”, “Setpoint heating” “SELF TEST”,
Alarm log” and “Timer” protected by administrator password.
 “Stop at low voltage changed, new 20,0-52,0V (old 42,0-52,0V)
 “Setp. at line failure” changed, new 25-70°C (old 28-70C)
 “AC unit” changed, new “not installed”, 1, 2 units. (old Not installed/Installed)
 New parameter “Diff temp AC2” 2-5°C. Temperature difference between start
and stop of AC unit 2.
 New parameter “Delta-T FC/AC” 0-10°C.
If AC-unit installed: Shifting from Free cooling to AC-mode will take place at an
outdoor temperature of “Setpoint cooling”- “Delta-T FC/AC.

Control algorithm  Control algorithm regulator changed to PI to P function. See temperature

control algorithm on last page.
 Fans will start at lower temperature than “Setpoint cooling”.
See table below

“P-band fan” Fan start at

1°C “Setpoint cooling”
2°C Setpoint cooling” - 1°C
3°C Setpoint cooling” - 1°C
4°C Setpoint cooling” – 2°C
5°C Setpoint cooling” – 2°C
6°C Setpoint cooling” – 3°C
7°C Setpoint cooling” – 3°C
8°C Setpoint cooling” – 4°C
9°C Setpoint cooling” – 4°C
10°C Setpoint cooling” - 5°C

See last page for drawing of control strategy.

AC units  There will always be a 3min. delay after AC shutdown, until the AC can be
switched on again.
 If two AC units are installed, they will shift start sequence each time both units
are shut down.
The start sequence will also be shifted if one AC unit has been constantly on
for 24 hours.
 There is an AC exercising mode in controller.
Ten days after the last start up of any AC unit, all installed AC units will be
exercised for 5min.

Timer function The timer function has been modified.

Timer function cannot be activated if indoor temperature is above 30°C, and timer
function will be disabled if indoor temperature rises above 30°C.
If no AC are installed, the fans are restricted to max. 40% capacity in Free Cooling
mode during Timer function.
If AC is installed, then AC and not Free cooling will be used for cooling during timer
function.
During Timer function “Setpoint cooling” is changed to 24°C and “Setpoint heating” is
changed to 19°C

Communication MODBUS protocol changed to support two AC,

New parameters:
Address 15h, bit7 = AC2 unit installed. Read only
Address 18h, bit4 = AC2 unit active. Read only
Address 21h = Diff temp AC2. Read/Write
Address 22h = AC2 unit installed. Read/write

See next chapter for a description of all parameters.
