Should ESP be
compulsory at universities? 
      Since English language
started to be considered as a lingua franca, learning it has become a priority
in many
countries around the world. For this reason, learning English as a
second or foreign language is compulsory from fourth
grade onwards in Argentina.
However, this is not the case in some universities where English especially
English for
Specific Purposes is offered as an optional subject. In fact, there
are several reasons why ESP should be compulsory at
universities. 

      One reason is that ESP helps


students in the development of their professional careers. Due to English is a
lingua
franca many people is motivated to learn ESP because it may be required
when looking for a work. Hutchinson and
Waters ask the following question: "What knowledge and abilities will the
learner require in order to be able to perform to
the required degree of
competence in the target situation?". This knowledge of the English
language may be useful to
perform specific functions
in their professions and, therefore, more ESP courses should be offered at
university.

If

that need to write in English. For this reason, ESP is absolutely necessary since it provides students with contents
that they need in order to develop each language skill. In this way if a students needs more oral practice and
exposure ESP teacher develop specific teaching techniques and resources in order to stimulate the students'
communicative skills rather than focus on other skills that might not be  that necessary. Therefore the necessity of
ESP in college relates directly with the fact that it gives students all the tools they need to in order to develop the
specific skills they need in they careers. 

The fact that English has become the new lingua franca is one of the main reasons why every college student
should take a course of ESP during their career, not only in order to enhance their future professional development
but also because it helps them to put into practice the specific English skills that are needed for their careers.
Although ESP has become more popular in recent years, there is no doubt about how useful is not only for teachers
that need to develop better teaching techniques and contexts, but also for students that want to improve in their
careers.
