    1) Rutherford's atomic model showed that the atom consists mostly of empty space, with the positive charge and small mass concentrated in a tiny nucleus at the center. Electrons orbit the nucleus in allowed circular orbits or shells. 2) Bohr's model improved on Rutherford's by proposing that electrons can only orbit in fixed, quantized orbits and jump between these orbits by absorbing or emitting photons of specific frequencies. 3) Heisenberg's uncertainty principle states that it is impossible to simultaneously know both the position and momentum of an electron with perfect precision. This led to the modern quantum mechanical model of the atom.
