QUARTER 3
Week 1
Subject: STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
Grade Level: 11
Date:_________ Day:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of random variables
Content Standard
and probability distributions.
Performance The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable for a given real-life
Standard problem (such as in decision making and games of chance).
 Illustrate a probability distribution for a discrete random variable and
Learning its properties. (M11/12SP-IIIa-4)
Competency  Compute probabilities corresponding to a given random variable.

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Preparatory 1. Prayer
Activities 2. Greetings
3. Class Rules
B. Review What was our topic yesterday?
How do you find the values of a random variable?
C. Motivation The teacher will ask what is the probability of winning a lotto ticket.
D. Presentation The teacher will present the lesson and its objectives.
E. Activity Number of Defective Computer
In a computer laboratory, the teacher wants to find out if there is a defective
computer. Supposed three computers are tested at random, she asks one of her
CSS students to list all the possible outcomes, such that D represents the
defective computer and N represents the non-defective computer. Let X be the
random variable for the number of defective computers. Find the value of the
random variable X.

A. List the sample space in the given experiment, such that D represents the
defective computer and N represents the non-defective computer. Let X be the
random variable for the number of defective computers. Find the value of the
random variable X.

B. Assign probability values P(X) to each value of the random variable
Number of defective Computer X

F. Analysis The teacher will ask:

1. How did you find the activity?
2. How many outcomes did you obtain?
3. What are the values of the random variable?
4. How will you find the probability of each value of a random variable?
5. In the preceding probability distributions, what do you notice about the
probability of each value of the random variable?
6. What is the sum of the probabilities of all values of the random variable?

Probability distribution of a discrete random variable specifies the

probability of each possible value of the random variable. The distribution
functions of discrete random variables are concentrated as a mass for a
particular value, and generally known as Probability Mass Function.

Properties of Probability Distributions of Discrete Random

Variable
1. The probability of each value of the random variable must be
between or equal to 0 and 1. In symbol, we write it as 0 ≤ P(X) ≤ 1.
2. The sum of the probabilities of all values of the random variable
must be equal to 1. In symbol, we write it as ∑ P(X) = 1.

Ex. In a computer laboratory, the teacher wants to find out if there is a

defective computer. Supposed three computers are tested at random, she asks
one of her CSS students to list all the possible outcomes, such that D
represents the defective computer and N represents the non-defective
computer. Let X be the random variable for the number of defective
computers. Construct a probability distribution for random variable X.
Steps Solution
1. Determine the sample space or the S= {DDD, DDN, DND, DNN, NDD,
possible outcomes. Let D represent NDN, NND, NNN}
the defective computers and N for
non-defective computers.
2. Count the number of defective Possible Outcomes Value of Random
Variable X (number of
computers in each outcome in the defective cell phones)
sample space and assign the number DDD 3
to the outcome. DDN 2
DND 2
DNN 1
NDD 2
NDN 1
NND 1
NNN 0
c. Assign probability values P(X) to
each value of the random variable. Number of Probability P(X)
defective
computers X
0 1/8
1 3/8
2 3/8
3 1/8
G. Abstraction How will you find the probability of each value of a random variable?
Why should the sum of the probabilities in a probability distribution always
equal to 1?
H. Application The following data show the probabilities for the number of Banana Chips sold
in SHS Canteen:

Number of Banana Probability P(x)

Chips

0 0.100
1 0.150
2 0.250
3 0.140
4 0.090
5 0.080
6 0.060
7 0.050
8 0.040
9 0.025
10 0.015
a. Find P(X≤ 2)
b. Find P(X≥ 7)
c. Find P(1≤ X ≤ 5)
I. Assessment Answer the following in a ½ sheet of paper.
1. An experiment consists of asking three Grade 10 students at random if they
prefer to choose Academic track or TVL track in the senior high school. Use A
for Academic and T for TVL. Let Y represent the random variable
representing the number of TVL track responses

2. A pair of fair dice is rolled. Let X denote the sum of the number of dots on
the top faces. Construct the probability distribution of X for a paid of fair dice.

J. Assignment Study in advance the mean of discrete random variable.
