WATER
OIL
BRINE
2. Fill the cylinder with water Read and record volume (V) as accurately as possible
(considering meniscus)
3. Weight the cylinder with water and record the mass (ma)
4 Repeat procedure 1 until 3 and calculate the average value of the mass 6. Using oil and brine,
repeat procedura 1 to 4

Conclusion:
this experiment we first tested to find the density of water. Our results (0.886g/mL and
0.838g/mL) varied slightly which was probably due to water remaining inside of the flask when
we reweighed it for our second test trial. Our average density was 0.871g/mL though I believe
more testing would be necessary inorder to find a more exact density and altering the
experiment by using a dry flask every time instead of a reused flask. The second part of our
experiment required us to find the density of an unknown liquid, which turned out to be an oil-
based solute. Our results (0.761g/mL and 0.732g/mL) varied more in difference then in the
testing to find the density of water. The large variation may be due to a measuring issue because
the flask with stopper and liquid weighed a little under 1g more in the second test then in the
first test. Theaverage density was found to be 0.745g/mL though, like the experiment before, I
believe a more accurate result could be found by using a dry flask every time. The third part of
our experiment required us to find the density of an unknown liquid, which turned out to be an
BRINE-based solute. Our results (0.811g/mL and 0.892g/mL) varied more in difference then in
the testing to find the density of water. The large variation may be due to a measuring issue
because the flask with stopper and liquid weighed a little under 1g more in the second test then
in the first test. Theaverage density was found to be 0.849g/mL though, like the experiment
before, I believe a more accurate result could be found by using a dry flask every time.
