This striking Air Ceylon Douglas DC-8-53, 4R-ACQ (c/n 45604), arrived with the carrier in 1972 – the same year that Ceylon, a former British Crown Colony, was renamed Sri Lanka. The Long

Aériens Intercontinentaux (TAI) to form Union des Transporteurs Aériens (UTA). Under UTA, this DC-8 was leased to Air Ceylon between 1972-1978. Following this, it was bought by IAS Cargo and later
scrapped at Miami/International by 1984

One of the most distinctive aircraft designs of the 20th century was the Lockheed Constellation and Super Constellation – nicknamed the ‘Connie’. An example of the latter, this
L-1049G, F-BRNH (c/n 4513), initially flew with flag carrier Air France from 1953 as F-BGND until 1965. After being stored, it was acquired five years later by Catair which utilised it
in a convertible 102 passenger/cargo configuration. This particular Connie would be phased out by 1972 and broken up at Pontoise outside Paris two years later

The author spotted this vibrantly painted Convair CV-640, HB-IMM (c/n 412), from SA de Transport Aerien Genève

CV-440 standard for Swissair and was later sold on to SATA by 1968. Not long after being pictured, this CV-640 was

This Soviet-constructed, 1961-vintage Ilyushin Il-18V from Air Mali, TZ-ABE (c/n 181003304), rests on the ramp at Le Bourget. Not long after being pictured, the airframe was involved in a major
