Assignment No. 1 (Midterm)
1. Specify a key for a gear to be mounted on a shaft with a 2.00 in diameter. The gear
transmits 21 000 lb # in of torque and has a hub length of 4.00 in. See Figure P11–1.

Solution:
Substitute the 21 000 lb in for T, 2.00 in. for D, and 4.00 in. for L is the length of the hub.
T 21000
K= 2
¿ 2 ¿ 1312.5 lb/¿

D L ( 2.00 ) (4.00)
Final Ans:
K = 1312.5 lb/ ¿2
2.) Specify a key for a gear carrying 21 000 lb # inof torque if it is mounted on a 3.60-in-
diameter shaft. The hub length of the gear is 4.00 in.
Solution:
Substitute the 21 000 lb in for T, 3.60 in. for D, and 4.00 in. for L is the length of the hub.
T 21000
K= 2
¿ 2 ¿ 405.09 lb /in
2
D L ( 3.60 ) ( 4.00)

Final Ans:

K = 405.09 lb/ ¿2

3.) A V-belt sheave transmits 1112 lb # in of torque to a 1.75-in-diameter shaft. The sheave is made from

5. A 76.2 mm in diameter shafting of SAE 1040 grade, cold rolled, having yield point of 50 ksi
and with a 3⁄4 x 5 inches key. Compute the minimum yield point in the key in order to transmit
the torque of the shaft. The factor of safety to use us 2 and Sys=0.80 Sy.

6.) A keyed sprocket deliver a torque of 778.8 N-m through the shaft of 54 mm OD. The key
thickness is 1.5875 cm and the width is 1.11 cm. Compute the length of the same key. The
permissible stress value of 60 MPa for sheer and 90 MPa for tension.

Given:
TORQUE, T = 778.8 N m = 778.8 x 10^3 N mm
SHAFT DIAMETER, d = 54 mm

KEY THICKNESS, h = 1.5875 cm = 15.875 mm

KEY WIDTH, w = 1.11 cm = 11.1 mm

SHEAR STRESS, T = 60 MPa

STRESS IN TENSION, σ t = 90 MPa

SOLUTION :
CALCULATING THE LENGTH OF THE KEY ' L ' :
CONSIDERING THE SHEARING OF THE KEY:
THE SHEARING STRESS IS GIVEN BY;

T=2xT/dxwxL

HENCE, L = 2 x T / d x w x T

L = 2 x 778.8 x 10^3/ 54 x 11.1 x 60

L = 43.3 mm

CONSIDERING THE CRUSHING OF THE KEY:

THE CRUSHING STRESS IS GIVEN BY;

σc = 4 x T / d x h x L

HENCE, L = 4 x T / d x h x σ c

WHERE, σ c = 1.2 x σ t = 1.2 x 90 = 108 MPa

L = 4 x 778.8 x 10^3/ 54 x 15.875 x 108

L = 33.65 mm

FROM 1 AND 2; TAKING THE LARGER VALUE OF THE LENGTH

HENCE, L = 43.3 mm = 4.33 cm
7.) A metric M4 x 15 square key is used with a 16 mm shaft. If the allowable shearing stress is
50 MPa. How much torque can the assembly handle? The rotational speed of the shaft is 600
rpm.

Given:
w = 4 mm
h = 4 mm
L = 15 mm
D = 16 mm
N = 600 rpm
Ss = 50 N-mm^2

Solution:

T = 24 N-m
