MYP 5 Physics

Criteria D – Simple Machines

Name: _____________________ Date:_________________ Class #:_______

1. Background Information:

A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force.
There are six kinds of classical simple machines:

• Lever
• Wheel and axle
• Pulley
• Inclines plane
• Wedge
• Screw

We use most of these six simple machines every day. Often without giving them a second
thought.

2. Task:

STEP 1 – Assessing ATL Skills and Choosing a simple machine

1. Use Table 1 to self-assess your mastery of the two approaches to learning (ATL) skills mentioned.

2. Choose one out of the six simple machines and a specific problem it solves.

STEP 2 – Creating the Product

Choosing a Product

For this assignment you may choose your type of product from the five options listed below:

1. Cartoon Strip/Storyboard: Drama not your thing? More of an artist or an author? Then this
product is for you! Create a cartoon strip or a storyboard. Illustrate your knowledge on paper or
digitally, the choice is yours. Set your story in space, in the distant past, or underwater.

2. News report/Video Documentary: If you’re a fan of Planet Earth, An Inconvenient Truth, or
Before the Flood then you are in luck. This is your chance to get the truth about your problem
out there. Feel free to interview your classmates, your teachers, your parents, and random
people from Mega Bangna to get their perspectives and change their mind on an issue that is
important to you. Go out there and make a convincing news report or documentary about your
simple machines.

3. Infographic: An oldie but goodie. Use piktochart.com or other websites to create a beautiful
infographic that is understandable by the reader. However, be careful not to leave out important
text or discussion. Use visuals to clarify, not to simplify.

4. Structure or model: Are you up for a more hands – on challenge? Create a small model of your
simple machine using whatever material you can find. Label the parts of the machine and make
sure to include the relevant information and the discussion. This can be done in a separate word
document or you can attach it to your structure.

5. Write a Scientific Essay: Why are you even reading this option?!? Be a risk-taker and try
something new! However, if you insist, you may write a scientific essay. Remember that these
essays have a very rigid structure.

Requirements

Your product will need to include the following things:

a. An explanation of your simple machine in general
i. Name and brief historical summary.
ii. How it works and the physics behind it.
b. An explanation of how your simple machine solves a particular problem
i. An explanation of the problem.
ii. A explanation of how your simple machine solves that specific problem. Include a
numerical example with real/realistic numbers
c. An evaluation of your simple machine
i. The advantages and limitations of your simple machine including a comparison to
alternative solutions if relevant.
ii. The advantages and limitations of your simple machine considering a chosen
factor
iii. Reach a conclusion, summarizing your simple machine and how it solves that
problem.
d. Work cited (APA)

Regardless of the option that you choose, your text will be sent through TurnItIn. If you choose
Product #1 or #5 you will be asked to copy and paste the text from your cartoon
strip/storyboard/model into a Word document. You do not need to format this document and it does
not need to “look good”. It will be used only to ensure that you have not plagiarized any material from
other sources.

If you choose Product #2 you may use a speech-to-text app such as Voice Texting to convert the
dialogue in your dramatic performance or video documentary into text. Then just paste this text into a
Word document for submission.

STEP 3 – Submitting your Product

1. Your final draft is due on __________________________________________________________.

2. Please use the following checklist when submitting your assignment to ManageBac:

o The text version of my product is a WORD OR PDF file. Pages files are not acceptable!

o The title of my file is “name.docx” or “name.pdf”.

o My Cited References is not a separate file. It is included at the end of my scientific essay.

o I am aware that my report will be submitted to TurnItIn.com to be tested for plagiarism.
