(ἀπέρχεται ... καλεῖ) The student goes away. Strepsiades summons Socrates.

ΣΤΡ. ὦ Σώκρατες, ... ἐλθέ. Socrates, dear Socrates, come over here!

ΣΩΚ. τίς ἐβόησε; ... τῶν σοφιστῶν; Who shouted? Who used force [to enter] into the think-tank of the
sophists?

ΣΤΡ. ἐβόησα ... τὸ φροντιστήριον. I shouted, Strepsiades from the deme Kikynna. But I didn’t use
force [to enter] into the think-tank.

ΣΩΚ. τί ... κατὰ τί; What do you call me, creature of a day? But for what did you come?

ΣΤΡ. ἦλθον ... σοφός. I came into the think-tank as student. For by now I heard you that you were wise.

ΣΩΚ. εἰπέ μοι, ... εἰμι; Tell me, who said this? How did you hear me that I was wise?

ΣΤΡ. εἶπε ... τις. One of the students said this.

ΣΩΚ. τί ... λέγε. What did the student say? Say it!

ΣΤΡ. εἶπε γάρ ... ἐπήδησε. ... For the student said that a flea bit Khairephon’s eyebrow. Next it jumped
against your head. ...
... σὺ ... θερμόν. ... you asked Khairephon how many of its own foot lengths the flea jumped. And you
measured up in this way: for first you took the flea and place [it] into hot wax. ...
... ἐπειδὴ ... χωρίον. But when the wax became cold, the flea had some persian slippers. And then you
measured up the distance.
οὐδέποτε ... σοφόν. I never saw in this way a wise deed.

ΣΩΚ. οὐδέποτε ... τυγχάνεις; Did you never see at least a wise deed in this way? But from where do
you happen to be?

ΣΤΡ. Κικυννόθεν. From the deme Kikynna.

ΣΩΚ. οὐ γὰρ ... ἀμαθής. For you didn’t escape the notice of me as you are from the country, and
ignorant.

ΣΤΡ. μὴ μέμφου ... ὦ Σώκρατες; Don’t blame me. But tell me, what do you do as you are in this basket,
Socrates?

ΣΩΚ. ἀεροβατῶ ... ἥλιον. I tread the air and surround with thought the sun.

ΣΤΡ. τί δ’ ... ἐπὶ κρεμάθρας ὤν; Why do you do this from a basket, but not from the earth? What do you
discover or what do you learn, as you are from a basket?

ΣΩΚ. οὐδέποτε ... τὴν φροντίδα. For I never discovered the things in the sky nor I learnt anything, as I
was observing from the earth. For the earth happened to be preventing the thought.
