What is Drama?
• Drama is a genre that depends mostly on in-depth character development,
interaction, and highly emotional themes. In a good drama film, the audience is
able to experience what other characters are feeling and identify with someone.
• This genre could be especially useful by challenging the ignorance from
stereotypes by bringing it down to a more personal and complex level. As well,
such movies could also be therapeutic by showing how characters cope with
their problems, challenges, or issues, and to the extent the viewer can identify
with the characters with his or her own world.
• Dramatic films include a very large spectrum of movies, war movies, courtroom
dramas, crime dramas, historical dramas, and biography films are all drama
films, but because of the large number of drama films these movies have been
sub-categorized. All films genres can include dramatic elements, such as
comedies, action films, and horror movies, but typically films considered drama
films focus mainly on the drama of the main issue.
History
• Drama originated in Greece in 5th century BC. The oldest
surviving drama is said to be "The Persians", a historical
tragedy by Aeschylus.
• Throughout over a thousand years, drama has grown, and
continues to grow, becoming one of the most
demanded genres in the United States as of 2021, along
with its rising popularity in other parts of the world, such as
Korea and the UK.
Subtypes
Dramatic films focus on human emotion, high-stakes
situations, and highly compelling main characters.
• 1. Tragedy: A tragedy is a drama that centers on
human suffering and generally has a sad ending.
• 2.Romantic Drama: Romantic dramas are based on
the highs and lows of love.
• 3. Biopic: A biopic is a film devoted to the life story of
a real person.
• 4. War movie: Military dramas tell stories rooted in
the machinations of war.
• 5. Costume drama: A costume drama is a period
piece set during another era.
• 6. Crime drama: A crime drama is a film mining the
dramatic story of a criminal or a detective who stops
them.
• 7. Coming-of-age drama: This type of film includes
the storyline of a young person growing into
adulthood.
