INTRODUCTION AND
LOCATION
 This Skywalk is crossing
the national highway with
cable suspension Bridge
resting on 41 m tall pylon.
Total length of skywalk is
1780 m which makes it
India's longest skywalk
ever built. The pylon of
the skywalk is made-up of
structural steel and is the
second steel pylon in
India after Vivekananda
bridge at Kolkata. The
Skywalk has open type
escalator in the entrance
foyer portion of Kharghar
Railway station with ramp
for alighting.
Introduction to
steel connections
 Many configurations are used for
force transfer in connections. The
configuration depends upon the
type of connecting elements, nature
and magnitude of the forces (and
moments), available equipment,
fabrication and erection
considerations, cost, etc.
STEEL FRAMING OF
SKYWALK
Different elements of steel prov
a rigid structure to carry all kin
of load.

CONNECTIONS
Connections
Many types based on function
 Beam-to-Beam Connections
 Beam-to-Column Connections
 Column-to-Column Connections
 Column Base Plates
 Pocket Beam
 Gusset plate connections (truss
type, frame type,
bracings, …)
 Splices (cover plates, …)

Steel Framing
Connections
 Framed Connections
 Bolts only in web, not the flanges
 Transmits only shear
 Not bending moment
 Accomplished with clip angles & bolts/welds

Moment Connections
 Transmit shear & moment
 Flanges must be connected
 Bolt/Weld Flanges
 May require column stiffener
ADVANTAGES

Framed connections
 Only shear transfer
 Equivalent to pinned end for the beam
 No moment at the beam end
 Rotation is freely allowed
 End reaction only
 Web of the beam is connected
 No connection for the flanges

Stiffener plates are
used to ‘shore up’
the column flanges
against the forces
transmitted by the
beam flanges. The
stiffeners may be full

extend

STAIRCASE SUPPORT
Wedges used for
Steel frames on stringer
Beam.

The staircase has 4 flights

With 3 landings.
Each landing had steel
Framed support from
Base.
