1. Preliminary remarks
The Buchholz relay is a protective unit in compliance with EN 50 216 that serves to monitor liquid-insulated
devices with expansion tank such as transformers and earth leakage coils.

The protective function of the Buchholz relay allows signalling of the following:

Accumulation of unsolved gases in the insulating liquid - upper switching system

Loss of insulating liquid - lower switching system
Unacceptable flow rate of the insulating liquid - damper/lower switching system

The standard Buchholz relay recognizes unsolved gases in the insulating liquid and indicates their presence
when a specified threshold is exceeded, meaning that up to a gas volume of 250 cm3 no signal is generated.
Besides, no information can be provided about the process of gas accumulation over time.
The process of the generation of unsolved gases in the insulating liquid over time is a very important criterion
for the evaluation of the fault as the quantity and composition of the fault gases depend on the kind and
quantity of the energy of the underlying fault. Spontaneous and energy-rich faults cause large gas quantities
within a short period of time, whilst small volumes of gas are generated in the case of minor and insidious
faults.
The Buchholz relay of series NM allows continuous and analog gas volume measurement so that gases
which have accumulated in the relay are detected at an early stage, information about the generation of the
gases obtained and the conditions provided for the analysis of the fault at an early stage.

2. Construction of the Buchholz relay of series NM (Figure 1)

The principal construction of the Buchholz relay with floats and 2
damper as well as their electro-mechanical functions have been
maintained.
Buchholz relays of series NM are equipped additionally with a
capacitive sensor (1). The sensor is installed in the cover of the
Buchholz relay. The cover of the terminal box accommodates the
electronic amplifier of the measuring unit. Sensor and amplifier are
connected by a cable connector (2).
The measured value is based on capacitance variation of the sensor 1
caused by variation of the insulating liquid level in the Buchholz relay.
Figure 1
3. Dimensions (Figure 2)
Figure 2 shows the arrangement of the measuring unit using the example of the Buchholz relay BF 80/Q. With
the exception of the cover of the terminal box that was raised by 17 mm the installation dimensions of the relay
have not been changed. Hence, relays with analog measuring units can be installed in existing systems.

4. Measuring range of the Buchholz relay of series NM (Figure 3)
Analog measurement of the gas volume is possible
between 50 cm3 and 300 cm3. Lower gas volumes
cannot be measured reliably because of high 400

inaccuracies. Measurements beyond this range are 350

Gas volume [cm³]

not necessary as in this case the upper switching 300

system will respond. Besides, the construction of 250

the Buchholz relay (larger gas volumes escape 200

towards the expansion tank) does not allow such 150

measurements. The operating point of the upper 100

switching system (upper float) is a gas volume of 50

200-300 cm3. 0

5. Switching system designs

Buchholz relays of series NM are designed as double-float Buchholz relays.
Magnetic switches are used as switching elements and can be designed as NC contacts, NO contacts or
changeover contacts.
Examples of switching system designs are given under section 16.“Ordering data”.

Explanation of symbols: Notes:

11 The switching systems are shown in their

Switching symbol with neutral position. The neutral position
--- connection scheme corresponds to the operating state when the
12 Buchholz relay is filled with insulating liquid
up to the required level and the device to be
12 11 monitored operates without any fault.
The inner side of the cap of the Buchholz
Pin configuration in the relay accommodates a plate with the

terminal box connection diagram and the terminal
assignment.

6. Mode of operation of the Buchholz relay

6.1. Upper and lower switching systems

When operating properly, the Buchholz relay is filled with insulating liquid up to the required level. Due to
their buoyant force the floats are in their top limit positions.

When unsolved gases are generated in the insulating liquid,

gas bubbles are accumulated in the gas dome of the
Buchholz relay. As the insulating liquid level falls, the top
float moves downward. When the switching position is
reached, a magnetic switch gives a warning signal. In Gas
this case a gas volume of approx. 200-300 cm3 has been
collected. Any additional gas volumes produced will
escape through the piping into the expansion tank
Öl
(Figure 4).
Figure 4

In the case of leakage on the device to be

monitored the top float will move downward
as the insulating liquid level falls and the top
switching system responds in the same way
as in the case of gas accumulation. If further
insulating liquid is lost, the expansion tank
Luft and the piping above the Buchholz relay as
well as the Buchholz relay itself will be
Öl
drained so that the falling lower float actuates
a magnetic switch causing shutdown of the
equipment to be monitored. (Figure 5)
Figure 5

Vigorous gas generation and consequently a

high flow rate of the insulating liquid in the piping
leading to the expansion tank also cause a
shutdown signal (operation of the damper) when
the specified limit value for the flow rate of the
insulating liquid is exceeded. With EMB
Buchholz relays the damper is kept in its
position by a magnet, i.e. the damper is
maintained in its normal position by a permanent Öl
magnet. The damper will move into its operating
position only when the limit value of the flow rate
of the insulating liquid is exceeded. As the
damper is kept in its position by a magnet, the Figure 6
Buchholz relay is resistant to shock and vibration.
(Figure 6)

Gerätebau Barleben GmbH
6.2. Analog measuring unit (Figure 7)

The output signal of the amplifier downstream of the capacitive sensor is a current signal that depends on
the insulating liquid level.
It should be noted that, for design reasons, current of the sensor remains relatively constant up to a gas
volume of approx. 50 cm³. The equation will provide the actual volume only when the current signal
becomes smaller and, hence the calculated volume clearly larger.
The measuring range of this sensor unit is between 50 and 300 cm³ (gas volume).
Figure 7 is a graphic illustration of this relationship.

7. Use
The Buchholz relays of the NM series are designed such that they can be used both as a
component/sensor of a monitoring system and as a separate unit with a suitable control and display unit.
The output signal of the measuring unit of the Buchholz relay of the NM series is a standard current
signal between 4 mA and 20 mA.

usual manner. The functions of the upper and lower floats as well as of the damper are
ensured fully.
The extra function of the NM series (analog and continuous gas volume measurement) is
ensured by a capacitive measuring head with appropriate electronic components. Supply
voltage of this assembly is 24 volts DC. This voltage must be made available by the user.
The output signal of the measuring unit is a standard current signal (4 – 20 mA). It depends
on the user how and in what form this signal is processed.
The scope of delivery of a Buchholz relay of NM series covers a 10 m long shielded three-
core cable with connector to the amplifier. These cables are used for the supply voltage and
the output signal.

Gerätebau Barleben GmbH
10. Information about Buchholz relays with the identification number 23 –
„Damper kept in response position“

For Buchholz relays which are not provided with the feature „damper kept in the response position“,
buoyance of the lower float returns the damper to its normal position after the flow rate has returned to its
normal level. Buchholz relays with the feature „damper kept in the response position“ are designed such
that the damper after it was operated due to an unacceptable high flow rate of the insulating liquid is
locked in its position and, hence is kept in this position even after the flow rate has been reduced. The
signal generated is also maintained. The damper has to be unlocked manually by turning the test button
anticlockwise. When unlocking the damper, also check the insulating liquid level in the Buchholz relay.
Bleed the Buchholz relay, if required. (See also under section 6.1.1., p. 11 and section 5.2., p. 7).

11. What to do in the case of gas accumulation

When a gas warning signal is given, the gas should be analysed immediately to determine the cause of
the fault and avoid potential extension of the damage.
The gas can be taken directly from the Buchholz relay with the help of the test valve.
Alternatively, the gas can be removed and transported in a gas sampler ZG 1.2. (an accessory) installed
at normal operating height on the device to be monitored (e.g. transformer) and connected with the
Buchholz relay through a pipe.
For gas sampling and transport it is recommended to use the gas sampling cartridge BGS supplied by
EMB.
Bleed the Buchholz relay after removal of gas.

12. Maintenance

Buchholz relays are relatively insensitive to ambient conditions. Therefore, no special maintenance is
required for operation.

Buchholz relays should be inspected and checked as specified in the maintenance instructions of the
equipment operator. Make sure that the functional checks described are performed.

! Note: When removing the Buchholz relay make sure that the device does not
contain any insulating liquid.
