Stress by Suffix

In the following chart you will find some of the most common suffixes in
English. Some of these suffixes don’t change the position of the primary
stress in the word. However, other suffixes do, so it’s important to know
them and practice them.

In the case of the suffix -ate, remember:
1. Stress is usually on the third to last syllable.
2. The suffix is pronounced /eɪ/ in verbs and /ə/ or /ɪ/ in adjectives and
nouns.
