Book: “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen

SCENARIO
UVODNA SCENA

Porodica Austen

Cassandra Austen excitedly enters the room, saying: “Mom, Dad, come, we are ready for our play!”.

She leads them to their home stage, then says: “Have a seat and prepare for the masterpiece written
by Jane.”

Jane stands in front of the stage, Cassandra leaves.

Jane: ”Now, we want to present to you the play we have been working on for the past few weeks. Do
we really know what pride and prejudice are? Pride is consciousness of one's own dignity and a feeling
of deep pleasure derived from one's own achievements, while prejudice is preconceived opinion that is
not based on reason or actual experience...Will people eventually learn to control their pride and even
overcome Prejudice? Let’s find out.”

PRVA SCENA

Mjesto: u kući Bennet , Likovi: gospođa i gospodin Bennet, Elizabeth, Lydia, Jane, Mary, Kathy;

The Bennet sisters are getting ready for the ball, doing their make-up, hair and dressing up.

Mrs. Bennet tightens Jane's corset, complaining about her appearance: ”You better behave like a
lady should, take a deep breath, smile at everything he says and agree with him. You know what you
have to do. Consider the luxury and wealth that Bingley possesses. I will be the mother of “lady of
Neatherfield”, the lady Lucas will be so jealous.”

Mr. Bennet, sarcastically: “Yes, you will have everything your mother wanted when she married me.”

Elizabeth: “ Mom, do you want these things for Jane or for yourself??”

Mr. Bennet: (uz podsmijeh) “Let’s not be late or Lucas will steal your prey ”

Mrs. Bennet: “Oh my God, yes, yes, hurry up! Jane has to be Mr Bingely’s first dance tonight.”

DRUGA SCENA

Mjesto: bal, likovi: Mr Bingley, his sisters Mrs Hurst and Mrs Bingley, Darcy, family Bennet

Mrs. Bennet insists to the husband: “Let’s find Mr Bingley, you have to introduce our Jane to him.
You know, I can’t do everything on my own like always! For once, do something for your daughters!”

Mr. Bennet starts to talk, an acquaintance stops him, then he mutters to himself : “Thanks God I
don’t have to deal with this.”

Mrs. Bennet angrily turns in Mr Bingley's direction saying : “Oh for God’s sake!”, he grabs Jane with
one hand, Elizabeth with the other... drags them towards Mr. Bingley.

They reach Bingley, Mrs. Bennet tells him: “Mr. Bingley, this is my eldest daughter, Jane Bennet,
Elizabeth and Marry Bennet, I have two others, but they are already dancing”

The Bingley sisters sneer at Mrs. Bennet from the sidelines..

Mr. Bingley: “Delighted to make your acquaintance. And may I introduce you Mr Darcy of Pemberley,
in Derbyshire!”

A stiff bow from Darcy, Elizabeth smiles, Darcy does not.

Moments later. Mrs. Bennet stands alone, while the others turn and talk... Elizabeth is standing in a
small group with Jane, Bingley, Miss Bingley and Darcy. Bingley can't keep his eyes off Jane, but is
frightfully at a loss in disguising his instant ardour.

Elizabeth: “How do you like it here in Hertfordshire, Mr Bingley?”

Mr. Bingley while smiling at Jane shyly: very much.

Elizabeth: “The library at Netherfield, I've heard, is one of the finest in the country.”

Mr. Bingley: “Yes, it fills me with guilt.”

He looks at Jane a little blush starts around his collar.

Mr. Bingley: “Not a good reader, you see. I like being out of doors. I mean, I can read, of course”

His sister steps in as the blush threatens to engulf his ears.

Miss Bingley (TO DARCY):“Your library at Pemberly, Mr. Darcy, is astonishingly good.”

Darcy: “ Thank you. It is the work of many generations.”

Miss Bingley: “And then you have added so much to it yourself.”

Jane: ” I wish I read more, but there always seems to be so many other things to do.”

Mr Bingley: “That's exactly what I meant.”

(Mr Bingley turns to Jane.)

Mr bingley: “May I have the honour?”

They leave, to dance.

Darcy: “Not if I can help it.”

them.
Elizabeth, Darcy and Miss Bingley stand in silence...

Bingley: “Oh, she is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld, but her sister Elizabeth is very
agreeable”.

They have stopped at the edge of the dance floor and have not seen Elizabeth and Charlotte, who
are standing close behind them.

Elizabeth smirks as she overhears their conversation.

Darcy: ”Perfectly tolerable, I dare say, but not handsome enough to tempt me.”
Elizabeth's smile drops.

Darcy: “You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time
with me.”
(Bingley goes off)

Elizabeth and Charlotte, who have overheard Darcy and Bingley's exchange.

Charlotte: “Ignore him, Lizzie, he is such a disagreeable man, it would be a misfortune to be liked by
him.”
Elizabeth: “ Don't worry. I would not dance with him for half of Derbyshire.”

Later. Bingley is politely dancing with Charlotte. As he does so, he catches sight of Jane dancing with
somebody else. (A look of pure longing)
