Solid Waste Disposal

The collecting, treatment, and disposal of solid waste that is discarded after
performing its purpose or becoming unusable is known as solid-waste
management.
Hence, it is impossible to consider solid waste disposal facilities like sanitary
landfills and open dumps as a sustainable waste management solution. Solid trash
can also lessen the quantity of waste generated by businesses and building projects.
This technique aids in the removal of waste that is no longer useful to us. But, if it
is not done, soil erosion and water contamination will have a detrimental impact on
the environment.

TYPES OF SOLID WASTE

 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
 Paints and Solvent, batteries, fluorescent lamps etc.
 Construction and Demolition Debris
 Industrial/Commercial Waste
 Hazardous Waste Lamps
 Regulated Medical Waste
 Used Electronic Equipment
 Used Oil - Information on used oil regulation in New York State.
 Waste Tires

1. Landfill- This method involves separating out rubbish that cannot be

recycled or reused and spreading it out in low-lying sections of a city
in a thin layer.

2. Incineration- Burning potentially dangerous materials at

temperatures high enough to eliminate pollutants is known as
incineration.

3. Waste Compactions- Blocks of waste items, including cans and

plastic bottles, are crushed before being recycled.

4. Biogas Generation - Biodegradation factories receive biodegradable

waste from the food packaging industry, such as food products,
animal waste, or organic industrial waste.

5. Composting- These biodegradable wastes are first buried beneath

several layers of soil, where they are then allowed to decompose
because of the actions of fungi and bacteria.

6. Vermicomposting- is the process of turning organic materials into

nutrient-rich manure by employing worms. Worms eat the organic
matte and digest it.

WASTE SEGREGATION
Waste segregation is the process of locating, classifying, dividing, and sorting
garbage in an effort to conserve, reuse, and recycle resources.
Trash or waste must be separated or segregated in order for the 3Rs to function.
Learn which rubbish or garbage may be recycled and which cannot first.
Biodegradable – waste or garbage that can be broken down or decomposed
Non-biodegradable – waster or garbage that cannot be broken down or
decomposed
This is called waste segregation. Yellow, green, red, and blue are the common
colors used in trash bins and containers.

Ecological Solid Waste Management Act No. 9003 of 2000.

An Act creating an Ecological Solid Waste Management Program, establishing the
necessary institutional structures and incentives, prohibiting certain actions and
imposing penalties for them, allocating funds for that purpose, and serving
additional purposes.

SIGNIFICANCE OF SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL

The reason solid waste management in your community is so crucial is that it will
safeguard your home from the dangers associated with solid trash.

3 reasons why proper waste disposal is important

1. HELPS PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT
• You may contribute to protecting the environment by utilizing the proper
garbage type and adhering to the rules. Instead of disposing of what we can
from your skips in a landfill, we reuse it.

2. ENCOURAGES HEALTH STANDARDS

• Following garbage disposal guidelines not only improves community

health standards but also aids in maintaining a clean environment.
• Because waste is disposed of properly, our environment is cleaner, which
means there are less hazards and health risks that could harm us.

3. SUPPORTS RECYCLING MATERIALS

 It's crucial that materials are regenerated for different uses. This not only
extends its usefulness and prevents it from ending up in a landfill, but it can
also reduce the need to create new materials.
SIGNIFICANCE OF WASTE SEGREGATION

 To lessen not only its negative effects on the environment but also potential
health problems brought on by poorly disposed-of waste and poisons.
 Trash segregation is also advantageous economically because it facilitates
recycling considerably more.

 Because segregated waste does not need as much physical or mechanical

sorting as mixed waste, it is frequently less expensive to dispose of.
 A Useful action that benefits the environment and lessens the amount of
waste dumped in landfills
