CEB4022 Materials Science for Chemical Engineering September 2022 Semester:

Assignment 2
Instructions: The assignment needs to be submitted in Dr Adilla’s pigeonhole by October 25,
2022, 12 pm the latest.

1 Briefly explain why thermal stresses may be introduced into a structure by rapid heating
or cooling. For each heating and cooling, what is the nature of the surface stresses? In
addition, if a rod of 405 stainless alloy 0.5 m (19.7 in) long is heated from 20ºC to 80ºC
(68 to 176ºF) while its ends are maintained rigid, determine the type and magnitude of
stress that develops. Assume that at 20ºC the rod is stress free.
[10 marks]

2. A load of 55 kN is applied to a cylindrical specimen alloy with stress–strain behaviour

shown in Figure 1. The specimen has a cross-sectional diameter of 3.0 cm.

Figure 1: Stress-strain diagram

a. Evaluate whether the specimen experience elastic and/or plastic deformation.

[6 marks]

b. Determine the increase in the specimen length when the load is applied. Assume
that the original length is 28.0 cm.
[4 marks]

3. Consider a wire of 3 mm in diameter and 2 m long. Calculate the resistance in the wire
if it is made of copper. Assuming a potential difference of 0.05 V, calculate the current
flow, current density, and magnitude of the electric field. Show your steps clearly.
