INTEGRATION
Seminar Topic 2 - ASEAN INTEGRATION: IMPACTS ON EDUCATION IN THE
REGION

Topic 2 - ASEAN INTEGRATION PROGRESS IN EDUCATION

DISCUSSION

Education is a powerful transformative force in the lives of ASEAN people. Quality

education is key to sustainable development of the region. It leads to better health outcomes,
peaceful and gender equal- societies, and decent work opportunities. It prepares ASEAN’s
human resources to be resilient, competitive and ready to face and ever-changing future. Aside
from being a powerful driver of social and economic development, education has the potential to
raise ASEAN awareness and foster a regional identity.

1. An ASEAN Community had been developed by the end of 2015, in which a truly "People-
Centered" ASEAN had begun More commitments to building a better ASEAN community had
been pressed.

*A project aimed at enhancing ASEAN unity by addressing educational gaps among its
members.

*In order to boost global competitiveness, there is a higher demand for trained individuals.

There is a greater need for resilient and trained individuals to keep up with the appropriate
response to global challenges. Asean integration prepares for the rigors of a global economy.
They have challenged states and school districts to set clearer, higher standards and assess
student progress in more creative ways, prepare more productive teachers and provide
productive interventions in failing schools.

- Greater cross-sectional collaboration

Cross sector collaboration is when two or more organizations work together across sector
industry, and government to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Successful collaboration
may lead to the foundation of a cross-sector partnership, in which partners agree to leverage
their resources and funding to work toward shared, measurable goals.

This means that more cross-sectional cooperation may result in an improved societal
outcomes that are advantageous to the society as a whole.
*Promoting and forming educational sector collaborations in the region

Regional alliances in the educational sector that have a same vision and goals could
promote and improve learning through collaboration . ASEAN supports global and regional
commitments in education by promoting lifelong learning. Specific priorities include advancing
future ready education at basic and higher education levels and technical and vocational
education and training.

ASEAN’s work in education include:

-Supports for students and learners transition to the workforce through internship opportunities,
higher education scholarships and responsive skills development.

ASEAN helps the students for them to become adaptable to some sort of alteration. For
example, through internship opportunities, they were given the chance to have hands-on
experience in which they can apply what they've learned. Another is through higher education
scholarship wherein the ASEAN gives an opportunity to the students who are dealing with
financial problem and one example of which is giving financial assistance such as TES. Number 3,
is through responsive skills development where they’ve provided some educational tools for
example computer equipment that they can use for them to become computer literate since the
use and advancement of technology is very prominent nowadays.

-Supports for teachers and vocational trainers on the latest teaching methods and strategies

ASEAN countries doesn't just focuses on the students but also to the teachers as well. In
some cases based on my observations, they utilize some medium of communication and this is
through conducting seminars or webinars where they can discuss on how they can improve their
teaching methods.

-Advocacy for safe and resilient schools

One of the advocacy of the ASEAN is safe and resilient schools, in which they are conducting
orientations or seminars wherein the topic is about restrictions on how to avoid such thing that
can harm the students. Just like for example, given the risk we are facing in the region, extra efforts
are required to strengthen education services to be better prepared and resilient to disaster risk. The
ASSI workshop serves as medium for learning and sharing experiences among key actors working in
disaster risk reduction (PRR) and education in order to inform the development of a framework for
ASEAN safe school initiative. Considering that Southeast Asian region has a high incidence of disasters
caused by natural hazards, and more than 100 million children live and study in Areas prone to disasters
such as earthquakes. Another example is giving safety precautionary measures like the wearing of
facemasks, social distancing, and others since this COVID started.

Preparation by the Philippines

The Philippines has been aware of the integration since years ago. A lot of changes happen
in the country among which is the adaptation of the K12 education program. In 2012, the
Philippines launched this program. Through this reform, the Philippines is catching up with
global standards in secondary education and is attaching a high value to kindergarten. It has
received both positive and negative reviews but as the way most of stories go, the not readiness
of the Philippines to adopt the educational system was underlined. As the students were not
given enough facilities and teachers were not given sufficient training. Although some people
would not agree with its implementation, the K12 program is still beneficial as it gives a better
quality of education, provides job opportunities for high school graduates, and prepares the
country for ASEAN integration. It gives Filipino students or graduates a comparison advantage
within a regional and global context.
