Emergency Department

INTRODUCTION :
 The emergency works 24 hours a day to receive patients, and
patients are divided into three types
 1- Injuries or light illnesses (they need the necessary medical care,
and a small percentage need a specialist)
 2- Injuries or more serious cases (those arriving by ambulance or
wheelchairs)
 3- Patients in need of rapid resuscitation (some of them are
transferred from the triage ward to the resuscitation rooms after
being examined initially)
Emergency Department Area:

The emergency department in a hospital contains 100 beds with an


area of 100 m2.
Emergency department in the hospital 200 beds up to 215 m2.

ELEMENTS: General location (requirements):
 1-Entrance and waiting.  The site should be chosen so that it is easily accessible by

departments
 Take into account the ease of communication between the emergency department
and the radiology department.
 The presence of horizontal and vertical movement in the hospital close to the
emergency department is taken into account so that the injured can be transferred
to other hospital departments, such as operations, childbirth, and others.
 The ease of contacting the outpatient clinic pharmacy should be taken into account
if there is no pharmacy for the department.

Design requirements for key components
Entrances:
 Entrances should include a canopy under which the ambulance stops.
 Entrances must be at the same level as the floor of the section by
pedestrian access and the other for cars.
 The slope of the pedestrian ramp should not exceed 1:16 meters.
 The slope of the ramp for ambulances should not exceed 1:10 m for a
height not exceeding 0.80 m.
 The section should contain two entrances, one for pedestrians and the
other for ambulances.
Reception and Registration Hall:
 A hall that allows receiving patients easily and conveniently.
 Providing a reception counter followed by a place for
records and a secretarial room.
 Providing waiting areas for the injured, sick and their families
and toilets.
 Provide a security or police office and records.
 Provide a small buffet for drinks.

Movement paths and doors


 The road width shall not be less than 2.40 meters.
 he net width of the doors should not be less than
1.40 meters, and the opening movement should be
in the direction of movement in the rapid
ambulance.
Checking and Sorting :
 The examination and triage ward should be at the
entrance to the department immediately after the
reception, because it is considered one of the most active
places, and receives most emergencies, especially
accidents.
 The privacy of patients on the beds should be taken into
account by means of movable curtains that do not
prevent the use of ambulance devices around the beds.

Isolation Room:
 At least one isolation room should be provided to
isolate infectious cases until they are transferred to
specialized treatment settings.
Examination and treatment room:
 Used in cases where specialized surgical
treatment is not required.

Recovery Room:
 The emergency department should include at
least one recovery room with 2 beds.
 An area of 18 m2 should be provided for each
patient, with a minimum width of 4 m per bed.
 The distance between the beds and the walls
should not be less than 1.2 m, and the distance
between the beds should not be less than 2.40 m
Surgical treatment room and plaster:
 Surgical treatment room and plaster:
 The dimensions of this room should not be less than 3.60
x 4.50 m.
 The width of the net door should not be less than 1.40 m,
preferably two unequal sashes (1.00 – 0.40 m).

 Small Routine Radiology Lab

 Small mobile x-ray storage
 A private pharmacy in the emergency department if the outpatient
pharmacy cannot be used
Design requirements for support services
Doctors' spaces:
 Rest house and office of the head of the department
 changing clothes for doctors
 the place of residence of the doctor on duty and toilets
 offices for doctors
 meeting room
 training room according to the job program
