Salt Analysis 1:

Test Observation Inference

1 Take a small amount of the


substance in a dry test tube
and heat it for about two
minutes. Identify the gas
and the residue.

2 To another portion of the


substance, add about 2ml of
dilute sulphuric acid.
Identify the gas. Name the
acid radical. Do not throw
away the contents of this
test tube.

3 Filter the contents of the


above test tube if
necessary, and collect the
filtrate. To about 1 ml of the
clear filtrate, add sodium
hydroxide, first in drops
and then in excess. What do
you observe? Deduce the
cation.
