Content: Engine Service >> Timing Belt >> Timing Belt, Replace

SONIC
This engine is classified as an Interference engine. If the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, a piston may contact an
open valve. Piston to valve contact may cause damage to the valve, piston and other engine components. In some cases
valve to valve contact may be experienced when the timing belt breaks or jumps timing. To avoid belt breakage, replace
the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.

With timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise
extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.

1. Remove air cleaner assembly.

2. Remove two upper timing belt cover attaching bolts, then cover.

3. Raise and support vehicle.

4. Remove front wheelwell liner inner front extensions.

5. Remove air conditioning and alternator belts, then drive belt tensioner, Fig. 1.

6. Set crankshaft balancer to Top Dead Center (TDC) of combustion stroke, Fig. 2.

7. Remove crankshaft balancer bolt, then balancer. Discard bolt.

8. On manual transmission models, remove bolt shown in Fig. 3. Install crankshaft locking tool No. EN-6625,
or equivalent, Fig. 4 using bolt previously removed.

9. On automatic transmission models, remove bolt shown in Fig. 5. Install crankshaft locking tool EN-6625,
or equivalent, Fig. 4 using bolt previously removed.

10. On all models, remove crankshaft balancer bolt, then balancer. Discard bolt.
