How do I help develop the learners’ reading comprehension?

Comprehension is the ability to understand written words. This is one

of the skills that students have to acquire. Without comprehension,
students gain no meaning from what they read. Comprehension strategies
are used to increase children’s understanding of the text to help them
become active readers by engaging with the text.

As an English teacher, it is one of my prime duties to instill the love of

reading to my students and develop their reading comprehension. In my
class, I see to it that students have opportunities to enhance their reading
comprehension skills.

I do this through take home reading. Students are assigned selections

to read at home and will be asked to share the next day what they have
learned from the selection that they have read.

Drills on vocabulary are also being done from time. I believe that if
students have wide vocabulary, there is a bigger chance of comprehending
what they are reading.

It is truly a challenge how to improve reading comprehension among

students in this digital era. Social media and online games are some of the
barriers as to why students are not fond of reading anymore. But through
our constant effort as reading teachers, we can develop students who think,
analyze, and comprehend what they are reading.
