PART TWO: CORRECT THE MISTAKES (3 pts)
Correct one mistake in each translation statement. Write the corrected statement on
your answer sheet.
A) Nirvana (Niết bàn), Karma (nghiệp lực), or Sutra (Kinh Phật) belong to terms of Material
culture.
B) “Quốc hội Việt Nam” is translated as “Vietnam’s Parliament”.
C) Word-for-word translation attempts to render, as closely as the semantic and syntactic
structures of the second language allow, the exact contextual meaning of the original.
D) Semantic translation is used in the case of most non-literary writing, journalism,
informative articles and books, textbooks, reports, scientific and technological writing, non-
personal correspondence, propaganda, publicity, public notices, popular fiction.

A) Translate the following statement into Vietnamese in 2 ways: semantically and
communicatively.

B) Translate the following statement into English in 2 ways: semantically and
communicatively.

PART FOUR: (3 pts)
Translation means rendering the message that is as close as possible to that of the
source text. It can be a “copy” of the original and it clearly reflects the structure, tone
and linguistic structures of the source text. Sometimes; however, the rendition sounds
unnatural in the target language.

Write an essay to discuss the reasons why there is some unnaturalness in the target language.
How should we deal with this problem?
Length requirement: 400 – 500 words.
