CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT W/ FS 4 Reflection 1

Every Child is Special

Let’s open the windows of our hearts and peep outside
to see little-little raindrops meet the glorious sun,
a rainbow forming sheer joy and great fun.

The title of the movie is “Every Child is Special: Taare Zammen Par.” A Hindi film
directed by Amir Khan and was released in 2007. Among its cast were Aamir Khan and
Darsheel Safary who played Ram Shankar Nikumbh and Ishaan “Inu” Nandkishore Awasthi,
respectively. Majority of this movie’s settings happened at school, Inu’s regular and
boarding. The film portrays an educational film whose primary purpose is to educate its
prospect viewers. This movie taught me that “every child has his own capabilities, his own
desires, his own dreams.”
Every Child is Special: Taare Zammen Par taught its viewers that there are different
mediums of educating learners. As we all know, traditional mode of education has been the
thread since time immemorial but in this movie Teacher Nikumbh says otherwise. Typically,
in order to read and write, the sound of letters, their shapes, the meaning of words, all this
need to be understood. The basic requirement of education/learning. In his observation and
based on his experienced, Inu is experiencing dyslexia – having difficulty in reading and
writing. Children with dyslexia can have other problems, for instance, difficulties in
understanding multiple instructions or poor, fine and gross motor skills. The traditional
method of educating learners is not applicable to Inu due to his dyslexia. In order to help
Inu, Teacher Nikumbh find innovative ways for Inu to learn what a student should learn. At
first, Inu was reluctant but Teacher Nikumbh’s dedication, determination and commitment
to teach his needy student, the former trusted the latter.
Teaching is not an easy profession. Lessons must be discussed or taught in diversified
ways that matches prospect learners or students. Teacher Nikumbh noticed Inu’s dyslexia
as well as his inborn talent when it comes to art. Inu’s innermost thoughts and feelings were
expressed thru art where he incorporated the same with in teaching Inu lesson and in no time
show a sign of progress. His enthusiasm in teaching Inu made him innovative and creative
in delivering education addressed to his learner for the purpose of educating. The movie
emphasizes that education for all scheme gives every child, like Ishaan “Inu” Nandkishore
Awasthi, the right to go to school whether regular school or boarding school, whether formal
or informal education, and whether traditional way or modern way.
My take. This movie conveyed how important education is. Aside from the education
a student or learner gained in a classroom setting, a child’s education begins at home wherein
parents are the first teachers. A parental involvement leads to good behavior, better
adaptation at school and a greater sense of personal competence. At young age, Inu’s parents
were not able to decipher his difficulties where he needed it most instead, he was punished
for every wrongdoing he has done. Worthy to note that there have been such gems amongst
us, who have changed the course of the world because they could look at the world
differently. Their thinking was out of the box and not everyone understood them. They were
ridiculed but despite that, they persevered and emerged such winners that the world
applauded them. There should be social consciousness on individual differences and
discouraged criticisms and prejudices should for the child to overcome his difficulties. That
being said, it made me realized how vague teacher’s job description is cause sometimes a
teacher must also possess a substantial knowledge about psychology in order to assess their
students, just like this movie. Indeed, every child is special. I highly recommend this film to
viewers who will contribute much to the development of a child.
