SCIENCE
GRADE 7
Module 3 – PURE SUBSTANCES
1 UCCP MAGILL MEMORIAL SCHOOL INCORPORATED
150, Quezon Avenue, Lucena City

Dear learners,

The significance of science to our lives cannot be overemphasized. In a world that is growing

increasingly dependent on the development of science and technology, scientific literacy has

become an important goal for all. As a learner, you play a very significant role that will enable to

meet the challenges in this fast changing world.

This module is intended to help you become more confident in presenting science lessons in

more meaningful ways.

Each lesson in this module usually has the following parts: Introduction, Objectives, Text,

Learning Task or Activity, and Self-Check Questions.

You will learn best from this module if you do the following:

1. Take the pretest before going through the module;

2. Do all the exercises and activities;

3. Try out the suggested strategies;

4. Keep the products of the activities you do as part of your portfolio; and

5. Take the posttest after you have finished all the lessons.

It is hoped that through this module, you will be as pleasant and fulfilling as possible in learning

science.

I wish you the best of luck!

PURE SUBSTANCE
All substances are homogeneous. Some mixtures are also homogeneous. However, there

are ways to tell if a sample is a mixture or a substance. Like mixtures, compounds are also made

up of two or more components. Being so, it is difficult to distinguish mixtures and substances

based on appearance.

In this module, you will find out that substances may be further classified into two:

compounds and elements. You will start with the primary characteristic that distinguishes them.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. Define the states and properties of matter.
2. Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds.
44 3. Describe some properties of metals and non-metals.
4. Make a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of common elements showing their
names, symbols, and uses.

Try This!
ACTIVITY 1
STATES OF MATTER
Name: __________________________________
Date: ________________________________

Preparation:
Prepare the following:
1. Fill up 1 small water bottle about 1/2 way with water
2. Cap a 2nd small water bottle shut without adding anything to it.
3. Place the marble in a 3rd small water bottle.
Gather the materials for this lab and place each of the states of matter in a bowl for each
student as the class enters the room.

Materials
For each student:
• 3 small plastic bottles of equal size

• water

• 1 small marble

• a bowl or tub to contain the items

Procedure
1. Shake the bottles and to think about what state of matter describes the substances inside
of each bottle.
2. Place the states of matter (the bottles) on the table from solid on the left, to liquid (in the
middle) to gas (on the right).

Note: You will record your experiment and show it to the teacher and
afterwards you will have a graded recitation.

THINK AND DO!

Lesson 1: Elements

PURE SUBSTANCE forms of matter that have a definite and unchanging chemical
composition.
ELEMENTS these are pure substances that are made up of only one atom.

These are currently 118 known elements, most of which are metal. Element symbol
consists of one, two or three letters. The first letter of an element symbol is capitalized and the
second and third if present are in lowercase.

Note: Read Table 3-1 page 50 of your book

PROPERTIES OF METALS, NON-

METALS AND METALLOIDS

METALS NON-METALS METALLOIDS

• Solid at room temperature • Dull, not shiny • Could be dull or shiny

(with the exception of • Poor conductor of heat • Conduct heat and
mercury) • Poor conductor of electricity, but not as well
• Usually shiny, with electricity as metals
metallic luster • Not malleable or ductile, • Good semiconductors
• High melting point usually brittle • Usually malleable

7

• Good conductor of heat and • Lower density (when • Usually ductile

electricity compared to metals) • Can both gain and lose
• Malleable – able to be • Lower melting point and electrons in reactions
pounded into sheets boiling points (when
• Ductile – can be pulled into compared to metals)
wire • Gain electrons in reactions
• High density (exceptions:
lithium, potassium and
sodium)
• Lose electrons in reactions

Lesson 2: Compounds

Have you ever experienced

combining one element with
another element? Did you know
that with each combination they
have something to build? Like Sodium and Chlorine when combined we can produce salt. We
also include hydrogen and oxygen the result is water. With each combination of different
elements we can call it Compounds.

What exactly are compounds? These are pure substances that consist of more than one type of
atom. They can be separated into two or more simpler substances

GUIDE QUESTIONS: (You can write your answer on the back of this paper)
1. What is your basis in classifying the substances?
2. What is common among the substances that are classified together?
3. What do you call the substances that are made up of two or more elements?
4. How do you define compound?
5. What is the difference between chemical symbol and a chemical formula?

ASSIGNMENT

Make a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of common elements showing their names,
symbols, and uses.
