KEYWORDS NOTES
Its objective is to develop post-harvest
Post-Harvest Quality and Safety Management handling technologies and protocol, to
of Organically Grown Fruits and Vegetables ensure safety and maintain quality of
organically grown fruits and vegetables
during harvesting, post-harvest handling,
storage, distribution and marketing
 The vegetables and fruits that grown
organically must be harvest in the
optimum time of maturity
 In harvesting, we need to be careful
so that we can prevent the
mechanical injury.
General Protocol
 We should harvest early in the
morning or late in the afternoon.
 In harvesting, instead of hand pulling
we must use an appropriate
harvesting tools and materials like
pruning shears, knife and scissors
 Put it in a harvest container
 The harvested fruit and vegetables
must be put in a shaded or cool area.
 In packing house, the product must
be sort according to their quality
 The leaves must be trim to avoid the
water loss
 Leafy vegetables must be wash before
it packs
 Use chlorinated water in washing the
fruits and vegetables.
 Air dry the vegetables and fruits
before it packs
 There must be appropriate number
of organic products in the container
to avoid mechanical damage and
injury.
Contamination Contamination of certain crops with the toxic
and carcinogenic aflatoxins is a serious
concern for agriculture and for animal and
human health. The predominant species
associated with this crop contamination is
Aspergillus flavus.

 Be sure that the compost that you are

using is well decompose.
 Make sure the harvesting tools are
clean and sanitize
 Remove the part of the vegetables
that has disease because it can be the
Protocols to Avoid Contamination
cause of contamination
 The number of products in container
must be appropriate to above
mechanical damage and injury. It
must also put in a cool temperature
during in the farm, transportation and
in the actual distribution
 Kalburo is not allowed in organic
agriculture but we can use bio
ethylene as an alternative.
 Contamination can occur in every
phase of the supply chain from the
production up to the distribution of
the product in the market.
 Harvesting tools must be clean and
sanitize
 Organic and conventional products
must be separated
Ethylene is a group of plant growth
regulators which are widely used for ripening
fruits and for the production of more flowers
Bio Ethylene and fruits. Ethylene is a small hydrocarbon,
the colorless flammable gas which is denoted
by a formula C2H4 or H2C=CH2. Ethene is the
IUPAC name for ethylene.
REFLECTION Vegetable and fruits are the source of the
nutrients of the human being. It is also the
source of our energy. However, to be able to
attain a good amount of nutrient the
agricultural product that we should intake
must have a good quality. Thus, we should be
aware of the postharvest quality and safety
management of organically grown fruits and
vegetables. Knowing the general protocols in
handling it can help us to avoid the
contamination in it. Other than that, we will
also know how to maintain the cleanliness of
our harvested fruits and vegetables.
