Influence of Social Media through Students’ Academic Performance during

Modular and Online Class

Introduction

Social media sets as the very crucial and common issue for us especially in the

present society. It helps individual communication, engage and offer information and

content to millions of users. The importance of social media should not be

underestimated, since it plays a very significant part in our lives today. The use of social

media has become an essential everyday occurrence in modern age. For social

networking and access to news and knowledge, and decision making, social media is

usually used. As well as exchanging, developing, and distributing content, it is a powerful

networking tool with others locally and globally. Social media can influence consumer’s

purchase decisions through reviews, marketing tactics and advertising. Essentially, social

media vastly impacts our ability to communicate, form relationships, access and spread

information, and to arrive at the best decision. (History.com Editors 2009)In the history

of social media first in the list was the first telegraph message on May 24, 1844, sent by

inventor Samuel F.B. Morse, over an experimental line from Washington, D.C., to

Baltimore, the letter said: "What hath God wrought?" Taken from the Bible, Numbers

23:23, and reported on a paper tape, Annie Ellsworth, a friend's young daughter,

proposed the term to Morse. The progress of the experiment will shift the national

structure of communication forever. This method of contact, however, does not count as

social media, even though the methodology they used in communicating was different in
the type of communication in modern world, it also led to social media advancement. The

actual history of social media began with the internet's development in the 1970s.

(Market.us 2020) In terms of consumer interaction using social media each

day, the Philippines took first place. In percentage usage Social networking is actively

used by 83.3 percent of overall active internet users. About 51 percent of the population

of the planet has a social network account. In 2020, as a source of news, 67% of social

media users in the 18-24 age range use social media and 43 percent of internet users are

engaging more on social media sites because of Covid-19. In the latest update, the top 5

most visiting websites, first in the list was Google followed by YouTube, Facebook,

Twitter, and Instagram. Through this websites we can be able to comprehend the

significance of social media. In studying, social media networks provide us with a

fantastic chance. As we assume, any student uses the internet at the moment, so there are

more internet benefits. The use of internet resources to build distance education has been

beneficial in the growth of social sites and the general interest of students. You just need

to access the internet and you need to use social sites. Via social media, anyone will

research in communities. So, it introduces a great revolution to this present world. Not

just in educational purpose but also for the worldwide individual connections with news,

updates and information. This lets us clearly respond to our module because of those

social sites.

In addition to those perks, there are several pitfalls. Nowadays, students

wasting time on social media, there's plenty of time to spend on social media surfing.

Basically, students are hooked and wasting their precious time with unnecessary careers

using social media networks. So, in our society, it's a huge concern. The objective of this
study is to determine the total influence of social networking sites through the students’

academic achievements this new approach of studying. We all knew that this new normal

was very hard for us to adapt, due to the global pandemic. Although social media was

very beneficial for us, but, it is one of the burden of the students while answering to their

modules.

The researchers decided to make a research study to test what’s The Effect of

Social Media through the students’ academic performance before the pandemic, during

this modular and online class.

Research Question

This experiment analyzed The Effect of Social Media to the Students’ Academic

Performance during Modular and Online Class.

This research explicitly pursued responses to the survey findings:

1. Does social media affect your academic performance especially this online

and modular class?

2. Can you still manage your time while using social media?

3. What’s the impact of social media to the students’ academic performance?


Scope and Limitation

This study delimited to investigate the Influence of Social Media through

Students' Academic Performance during Modular and Online Class. The respondents of

the study were composed of 50 randomly senior high school students who are studying in

Pagadian City Zamboanga del Sur.

The researchers in this study face challenges such as financial difficulties, a

lack of study resources, especially time, and the incidence of COVID 19, which is a

hindrance to our studies. The survey will takes three to four days to complete.

This study aims to determine the Influence of Social Media through Students'

Academic Performance during Modular and Online Class. This will be a quantitative

analysis with a descriptive-correlation data collection design. Gender, religion, and

personal status of the students were not included as coefficients in this study. Only the

responses of the respondents from the self-structured questionnaire will determine the

study's results.

Significance of the Study

The aftermath of this study provides a better understanding and address the

Influence of Social Media through Students' Academic Performance during Modular and

Online Class. The following will benefit from the study's findings.
The students are the primary beneficiaries of this research, because they will

be able to know the influence of social media through their academic performance

especially for this modular and online class in which they have more time to spend on

social networking sites than to their lessons. The findings of this study will assist them in

realizing that social media will have detrimental consequences for them.

Teachers. This research would remind them of their status as a second

parent to their students, and their responsibilities include not only teaching the subject at

hand, but also all other instruction that a parent does at home. Controlling techniques or

steps can also be used by them.

Community. The findings of this research would serve the society by raising

concern about the negative consequences of frequent use of social media. The world will

now know the disadvantages of social media , especially during this time of pandemic.

Parents. The findings of this study will inform parents about the potential

harmful consequences of their children when using social networking sites. This will also

include suggestions for preventing children's addiction to social media and potential

remedies.

The DepEd Officials would also benefit from this study, in which it would

provide them with information on what different methods or schemes teachers should use

to maximize students' academic achievements during this modular and online class.
The Researcher Themselves. For the Intellectual and shared knowledge

benefit that this study may provide.

Future researchers. This thesis will act as a resource and a roadmap for

other researchers working on related topics.
