Adult Learning (Andragogy): Effective Way of Teaching Literacy

You’ve undoubtedly heard of Pedagogy if you work in education. Most

likely, you’ve sat through workshops on the most effective teaching techniques.

If you're a student studying education, you’ve probably heard the phrase used

quite a bit in your studies. But do you know what Andragogy is? Malcolm Knowles

created the idea known as “Andragogy,” or “Adult Learning Theory,” which is

based on an adult learning strategy that is self-directed and independent. SDL

can be considered as learning by oneself, they learned through the actions of

others and by observation (Carre, 2011). Using student-led learning, or letting

students choose their method of learning together with the motivational method

is thus seen as the best way and most suitable solution in this situation. We need

to take into account their prior knowledge and learning skills since they are

already adults. We shouldn't push the learners over their comfort zones and make

them study in ways they find uncomfortable.

Knowles (1995) supplied the most eloquent explanation and

comprehension of Andragogy. The learning theory – the theoretical framework

for this theory. The learning theory is based upon adult and their desire to become

and/or to express themselves as capable human beings and has six components:

(a) Adults need to know a reason that makes sense to them, for whatever they

need to learn, (b) They have a deep need to be self-directing and take

responsibility for themselves, (c) Adults enter a learning activity with quality and

volume of experience that is as a resource for their own and others’ learning, (d)

They are ready to learn when they experience a need to know or be able to do,

(e) Adults’ orientation to learning is around life situations that are task, issue- or

problem-centered, for which they seek solutions, (f) Adults are motivated much

more internally than externally.

Adults should have access to learning experiences that are appropriate for

their learning preferences, whether they are visual, oral, or kinesthetic learners.

Role-playing exercises, experiments, and debates in small groups may all be

extremely effective experiential learning methods. Educators may give them

learning modules to read and comprehend, after reading they are required to

make a learning log where they can write all the insights and ideas of the lesson,

and then discuss the contents of their paper with others. Additionally, adults tend

to be more motivated to learn because of their goals and desire for betterment

in their lives or careers. Utilizing that kind of motivation, they are more likely to

enjoy the process while learning. It's not necessary to offer many options; even

something as simple as letting adult learners select the genre of the book they'll

read next might have a beneficial motivating impact. Furthermore, motivating

students to work harder can help them maintain and evaluate their progress

toward reaching their goals. Through cooperation, learners may improve their

writing abilities, increase the scope of their vocabularies, and grow their

understanding of writing as well as reading.

The effectiveness of student-led learning should not be a surprise given its

benefits. By assisting students in realizing their potential, promoting learning

through trial and error while minimizing the negative connotations associated with

“mistakes,” fostering independent and critical thinking and problem-solving

abilities, and raising engagement in the classroom, it moves away from the

outmoded one-size-fits-all model and embraces the personalized learning ethos.
