A Tree

Viewed from a distant vantage The bells tolling the vespers

I appear as a cross with arms outstretched; Hint to me their wailing;
As I stayed on my knees long enduring, Birds on my branches are covered with leaves,
It seems that I am kissing God’s feet. The spring at my feet has tears welling,

Like an organ in a church, But look at my fate,

Praying amid extreme sorrows, Dried-up, dying alone comforting myself.
Is the candle flame of my life I became the cross of the withered love,
Keeping vigil upon my tomb. And a watcher of tombs in the darkness.

At my feet is a spring All is ended! Night is a mantle of mourning

That sobs all day and all night; That I use to cover my face!
Upon my branches lie A fallen piece of wood am I, and prostate
The nests of love-birds. Neither bird nor people find any pleasure.

By the sparkling of that spring And to think that in the days past
You’d think of flowing tears bubbling; A tree I was of luxuriant and leafy growth;
And the Moon that seems to be praying Now my branches are crosses o’er graves,
Greets me with a pale smile. My leaves made into wreaths on tombs!
