MODULE 2 POST-TASK (LECTURE)

1. Give the synthesis of the movie

A documentary movie, Mommy Dead and Dearest, explores the life of a mother and
daughter who thought they were living a fairy tale life but ended up living a nightmare. Things
aren't always as they seem, especially in the case of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose, and what begins
as a gruesome narrative of murder, quickly comes down into a deceitful dark path. Child abuse,
mental illness, and young love all come together in this story.

Dee Dee Blanchard and her sick-wheelchaired daughter, Gypsy Rose, were adored
Springfield residents, but the strained neighborhood was rocked when Dee Dee was found killed
in her home and Gypsy went missing. Investigators tracked a violent Facebook post reading,
“that Bitch is Dead,” to Wisconsin. What followed was a terrible chain of events that no one
could have predicted.

2. Is there an abuse that took place in the scenario, if NO, justify your answer, and if YES,
how?

Yes, there was abuse that took place in the scenario. Gypsy Rose did not just experience
physically but also mentally by her mother. Ever since Gypsy was born, she was a victim of
Munchausen by Proxy.

Dee Dee, Gypsy Rose's mother, has claimed that her daughter suffers from a variety of
medical issues, including sleep apnea, leukemia, and muscular dystrophy, and that she requires
a wheelchair and a feeding tube. Gypsy was forced to pretend as if she had these medical
conditions because she knows she will have to face consequences if she didn’t act the way her
mother would want to. She was also forced to use a wheelchair, cut her hair, took numerous
medications, and underwent multiple surgeries, including eye surgery and salivary gland
excision.

All of these are represented in Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP), a mental health
disorder in which a caregiver injures or kills a person in his or her care, such as a kid, an elderly
adult, or a disabled person. MSBP is a form of child or elder abuse since vulnerable persons are
the victims.

3. Relate a possible anxiety disorder from the movie, and explain.

A. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Gypsy Rose could possibly have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of two reasons.
The first event was when she heard her mother scream and ask for help during the time of her
murder. Witnessing loved ones being murdered may cause trauma to a person. Years after the
incident, she was interviewed for this documentary and she still vividly remembers every detail
of her plan as well as her mother’s last words before she died.

The second occurrence occurred when she finally broke free from her mother's grip;
nevertheless, she may still be suffering from PTSD because, according to an interview, she feels
"freer in prison" than she did with her mother. Imagine how traumatic her relationship with Dee
Dee was, and how she now believes she is freer and happier behind bars. Constant doctor
appointments and lying to the media to meet her mother's desire for reassurance are enough to
cause her trauma.

4. Justify the action taken by the daughter

Gypsy Rose did not just go through trauma growing up but she also experienced
childhood deprivation where she can’t play and run around with her neighbor friends. She
would only experience “fun” during a paid holiday trip with her mother.

Early childhood deprivation is associated with higher rates of neurodevelopmental and

mental disorders in adulthood. This is why when Gypsy fell in love with Nicholas Godejohn, it
became an obsession because it was her first time to be with a guy friend to whom she thought
she could relate. And when this relationship became deeper, Gypsy badly wanted to get away
with her boyfriend by killing her own mother.

Gypsy Rose had been waiting for someone to help her, and Nicholas Godejohn appeared
to be the man for the job. Gypsy Rose blames Dee Dee's actions on Munchausen syndrome by
proxy, claiming she was a victim of child abuse. However, though public opinion had all but
shifted against her, the issue of her murder still stood.
