APPLICATION OF CONTINUITY OF A FUNCTION

Instruction: Solve the given problems on continuity of a function. Show the complete solution.
(30 points)

1. A rancher has 280 feet of fencing material to enclose two adjacent pastures as shown in
the figure.
a. Write the total area of the two pastures as a function of .
b. Identify the domain of the function.
c. Show that the function is continuous at its domain.

Solution:
P=280ft. Conclusion :
W. E.: 3x+4y =280 Therefore the function is
A=lw P= 3l + 4w continuous on its domain
A=xy
P=3x + 4y (0,280/3]

Solve for y:
3x +4y=280 A=x(70-3/4x)-----> function of area
4 4 A=70x-3/4x^2
=70-3//4x
Domain: (equate the fuction to 0)
Solve for x: x(70-3/4x)=0 70x-3/4x^2=0

x=0 70-3/4x=0 Domain:(0, 280/3]

70 = 3/4x 3x+4y=280
3/4 3/4
x=280/3
x=0 x=280/3
3x+4y=280 3x+4y=280
3(0)+4(280/3)=280 3(280/3)+4(0)=280
1120/3=280 280=280

2. A rectangular garden will be placed adjacent to a building. It will be enclosed by wooden

fences using 125 feet of material such that the building will be considered as a boundary
on one of the garden’s side. If feet is the side of the garden perpendicular to the
building, express the area in square feet of the garden in terms of . What is the domain
of this function? Show that the function is continuous within its domain.

Solution:
X. E:2x+2y=125 Domain:[0,125/2]
A=lw 2x+2y=125
A=xy x=0 x=125/2
2x+2y=125 2x+2y=125
2(0)+2(125/2)=125 2(125/2)+2(0)=125
Solve for y: 0+125=125 125+0=125
2x+2y=125 (transpose) 125=125 125=125
2y=125-2x
2 2
y=125/2-x Conclusion
Therefore the function f(x) is continuous on its
Solve for x: x(125/2-x) domain [0,125/2].
x=0 125/2-x=0(transpose)
125/2=x

P=125ft.
P=2l+2w
P=2x+2y

A=x(125/2-x)----->function of area
A=125/2x-x^2

Domain: (Equate the function to 0)

125/2-x^2=0
