CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

In school, students and other school staffs rely mainly on meals sold in cannteens

and other sidewalk vendors. Furthermore, In the study of Atienza (2021), stated that

school meals are essential to students and school staffs, especially meals that should

be served must be nutritios and beneficial to their health. These meals are usually

served at snack time and lunch break. Yet issues in the high prices of meals have

recently been on going as some students, especially in public schools were struggling

to fit these high meal cost in their daily allowance. Popli (2022), in his study shows

that school meals cost are battling soaring inflation, staffing, shortages and supply

chain disruption forcing many of the school canteens and sidewalk vendors to raise

their meal prices. This issue paved way for intreprenuers to come up with the idea of

selling rice pastil in an all-in-one meal and also its affordable price that fits to evey

student and schools staff’s budget.

Rice Pastil which is known to have been originated in Maguindanaon tribe in the

province of Maguindanao, is an easy to cook all-in-one meal composed of rice

topped with sauteed chicken, fish or beef flakes Joven (2022). This banana leaf

wrapped meal is a staple food in Maguindanaon’s market places, sidewalks, and

alleys. With its affordable price it has been dubbed as “Poor Man’s Meal”. According

to Oddey (2021), Chicken pastil is a Filipino-Muslim recipe that is sewed with

steamed rice topped with sauteed meat flakes fits to be sold in schools, especially that

it is very affordable to students in public who are less fortunate in their finance

situation. Rice Pastil business was known to be an affordable all-in-one meal that

gave idea to entrepreneurs to turn this product as business to be catered in public or

private schools. With its price of only fifteen pesos, it is much ideal as it fits in every

students and school staff’s meal allowances.

Lanao Del Norte National Comprehensive High school is a public located in

Santo Nino Village, Baroy Lanao Del Norte.  It is the mother of former barangay

high schools in the province. By virtue of Republic Act No. 5509, approved on June

21, 1969, LNPHS was converted into a national comprehensive high school.  At

present, it accommodates students from different municipalities of the province

offering basic and science curriculum. The school has four curricula: Science

Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Basic Education Curriculum

(BEC), Open High School and Special Program for Sports (SPS). Most of the

students in the school are under the BEC.The school has a good student-campus ratio,

with an enrollment of fewer than 3,500 students on a roughly 8-hectare campus.With

this large number of students, goods that fits to the needs of the students is ideal to

every business.

The goal of the researchers in this study is to determine the effectiveness of rice

pastil buisness in Lanao Del Norte National Comprehensive High School through

observing the daily net sales of a chosen rice pastil vendors and calculate each of

their net profit at the end of the month.

Statement of the Problem

In this analysis, the purpose if this descriptive study is to identify the

effectiveness of rice pastil business in the campus of LAnao Del Norte National

Comprehensive High School on the month of March, 2023 to provide insights for the

future vendors who wants to venture this business.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following question:

1. How will the data be retrieved in this descriptive study?

2. How much is the average daily net sales of rice pastil vendors in the month of

March, 2023?

3. How much is the net profit of the rice pastil vendors at the end of March, 2023?

Ha: There is a significant effect of rice pastil business in Lanao Del Norte National

Comprehensive High School.

Scopes and Delimitation

In this study, the researchers focuses mainly on the effectiveness of rice pastil

business in the school. The researchers will conduct this study for a reason that rice

pastil is an ideal all-in-one affordable meal for students and staffs. This study will be

conducted in the school of Lanao Del Norte National Comprehensive High School in

the month of March, 2023. By a descriptive type of study through which chosen

participants of the study will be monitored and observed accordingly based of their

daily net sales and a net profit will be calculated at the end of the month.

Significance of the Study

Community- The result of this study will be beneficial to the people in the

community through which the result will serve as basis to venture in this rice pastil

business.

Future Researchers- The result of this study will be beneficial to future

researchers through the result which will serve as their guide and reference for other

similar research studies.

Vendors- The result of this study will be beneficial to vendors through which the

result will serve as their reference of how effective their business in the school.

Definition of terms

The following terms are presented to clarify the definitions used in the

chapter:

Rice PAstil •An affordable all-in-one meal that originated in the province of

Maguindanao.

School • An academic institution where the rice pastil business will be marketed.

Vendors •The sellers of the rice pastil

Net Sales •Daily net sales of the rice pastil vendors

Net Profit •Monthly profit of the business

Business •An income generating work through which selling of rice pastil will be

marketed in the said school.
