There are many situations

where two quantitative


variables tend to be related or
relationship exists between
them.
Income and
educational
attainment may be
related to each
other. If one has a
high educational
attainment, he is
likely to have a high
income. Also high
income might be
associated with high
expenditures.
Most of us will accept that a relationship
exist between those variables. But how
can we determine the degree or strength
of relationship that exist between the
two variables?

Deals with the most common type


of relationship between two
variables, how to compute the
coefficient of correlation between
these variables; and to interpret
the value obtained.
A researcher has mapped the average SAT scores of students at
US colleges against the most popular music at that college.
Apparently, smart people listen to Radiohead over Beyonce
(fortunately, correlation doesn't equal causation).

a direct or positive relationship
between two variables implies
that an increase in value of one
of the variables correspond to an
increase in value of the other
variable.
an inverse or negative
relationship between two
variables means that an
increase in the value of one
variable corresponds to a
decrease in the value of the
other variable.

We can describe the relationship
between two variables by describing
the magnitude of correlation.

The degree or strength may be


perfect, high, moderate or low.
The degree or strength of
correlation between two
variables is hard to determine
by just using the scatter
diagram. Thus we have to use a
descriptive measure that will
tell us the magnitude or degree
of relationship between two
variables.
This descriptive measure is a single
number called the correlation
coefficient, denoted by r.
The value of r ranges from -1
to 1. Hence, there is neither a
value of r than can exceed +1
nor lower than -1. The
interpretation of the value of r
can be determined using
correlation scale.
If r is +1, then there is a perfect
positive correlation.

If r is -1, then there is a perfect


negative correlation.

If r is 0, then there is a no
correlation.
Value of r Interpretation

Between 0.80 to 0.99 High Correlation

Between 0.60 to 0.79 Moderate High Correlation

Between 0.40 to 0.59 Moderate Correlation

Between 0.20 to 0.39 Low Correlation

Between 0.01 to 0.19 Negligible Correlation

correlation while the absolute
value of r indicates the
extent or magnitude of
correlation
