Chapter 1
Motion in Plane
1.2 Projectile motion
Rev. Ex. TB (pg 3) Draw a diagram to show the direction of
the velocity of an object which is moving along a curved path
and then draw the vector diagram to show the velocity
components in x and y directions at a starting point p.

Rev. Ex. TB (pg 6) Why is the horizontal motion of the

projectile taken as uniform motion?
Horizontal motion of projectile is uniform motion because the
gravitational force does not affect in horizontal direction and
air resistance is ignored. (no force acting in horizontal direction)
Rev. Ex. TB (pg 6) Under what conditions can you have the
two–dimensional motion with a one-dimensional
acceleration.
Two-dimensional motion with one-dimensional acceleration can
be achieved in projectile motion under the condition of
continuous gravitational force in the vertical direction and
ignoring the air resistance.
¿ show the path of projectile motion is a parabola .
v 0 x =v 0 cos θ 0

v 0 y =v 0 sin θ0

In horizontal x direction, velocity is constant and acceleration

a x =0.

1 2
x=v ox t+ ax t becomes x=v ox t

x
t=
v 0 cosθ0

For vertical y direction, it moves with constant acceleration

a y =−g, v 0 y =v 0 sin θ0

1 2 1 2
y=v 0 y t+ a y t ⟹ y=v 0 sin θ 0 t− g t

x 1 x
y=v 0 sinθ 0 − g
v 0 cos θ 0 2 v 0 cos θ 0

1 x2
y=x tan θ 0− g 2
2 v 0 cos 2 θ0

This equation is analogous to a parabola path 2

y=a x +bx +c

∴ the path of projectile motion is parabola.

Rev. and Assessment (teacher’s Guide-TG)
What is the difference between instantaneous acceleration
and average acceleration?
Instantaneous acceleration is the rate of change of velocity at an
instant of time. Average acceleration is the rate of change of
velocity over a period of time.
Practice (teacher’s Guide-TG)
Push a ball by a horizontal force from the edge of a
horizontal table. Mark the point which the ball hit the
floor and measure the distance from the base of table to
that point. Measure the height of the table. Calculate
the time taken the ball hit the floor and initial velocity.
For a projectile, horizontal range depends on the initial
launch angle θ . Students work in group to prove that
0

the maximum horizontal range is at θ =45 ° by drawing a

0

graph of horizontal range versus initial launch angle for

15° ,30°, 45°, 60°∧75 ° .

Rev. and Assessment (TG)

1. An airplane releases a parcel while moving at a
horizontal speed of 90 ms-1 at an altitude of 250 m.
Calculate (i) the time between the parcel leaving the
airplane and it striking the ground, (ii) the horizontal
distance travelled by the parcel in this time.
(Ans. t= 7.14s, x=642.6m)
2. One record suggests that the maximum horizontal
distance an arrow has been shot on level ground is
889m. Assuming that the arrow was shot at an angle of
45°, at what speed was it launched? (Ans. V0= 93.39m/s)

1.3 Circular Motion

Practice (TG)
• Draw a radial line on circular disc and mark A and B in
different position on the brim.
• Measure the arc length between A and B and radius of
disc.
• Calculate the angular displacement.
• Rotate the disc 10 revolution and record the time taken
by stop watch.
• Calculate average angular speed.
Rev. and Assessment (TG)
1. What is meant by circular motion?
2. What is the relationship between linear velocity and
angular velocity? v=rω
3. Convert 100°to radians and revolution.
