The King Who Wanted to Touch the Moon
(Dominican Republic Folktale)
Once there was a king who always dreamed of touching the moon. He thought about
nothing else and completely forgot about running his Kingdom. One day he called for his
Royal carpenter and said to him, “my one wish is to touch the moon. You are so build me a
tower high enough for me to touch the moon.”
The carpenter knew this was not possible, but he had to do as the King ordered. The
Royal Carpenter set to work building the tower, but soon all the wood in the Royal Workshops
was used up. The carpenter explained the situation to the King, but the King said, “I must
touch the moon. I have an idea. Every person in my Kingdom shall bring all the boxes they
have to my palace and we will be able to finish the tower. “
So every person in the Kingdom brought their boxes to the palace. There were millions
and millions of boxes, and the carpenter set to work placing the boxes on top of each other.
But soon all the boxes were used for building the tower and there were no more boxes to be
found anywhere in the Kingdom. When the King looked at the tower he roared, “it’s not high
enough. Chop down all the trees in my Kingdom and make more boxes.”

So every tree in the Kingdom was cut down and made into boxes, which were placed
upon the tower. The tower now reached high up into the clouds.
The King began to climb the tower. Up he went, higher and higher into the sky, right
into the clouds.
At last the King reached the top of the tower. The moon looked very close. He
stretched out his hand to touch the moon, but he was still a few inches short. One more box
and his dream would come true!
“Bring me another box,” he called down to the carpenter.
“But there aren’t any boxes left,” replied the carpenter, “and there’s not a single tree or
even a scrap of wood anywhere in the Kingdom to make another box. “
The King was furious but suddenly he calmed down. “I have a brilliant idea, “he said.
“Take the box from the bottom of the tower and bring it up to me.”
“What? The bottom one” gasped the carpenter.
“Yes, the bottom one, and do it now before I have your head chopped off, “the King
roared at the top of his voice.
So the carpenter shut his eyes, took hold of the bottom box and quickly pulled it out.
Down came the tower! And somewhere under the millions and millions of boxes was the
King. No one knows what happened to the King, but we know that he never touched the
moon.
