The significance of historical images, photos and portraits of the Filipino

people

Collecting antique and historical photographs is a hobby but historians examine

these kinds of photos regularly. They examine them to see what life was like in the
period they were shot. Historical photos can give a lot of information. They are one
of the ways we remember what happened in the past.
four main periods of Philippine history:
 Spanish rule (1521–1898)
 American rule (1898–1946)
 Japanese occupation (1941–1946)
 Philippine self rule (1946–present)

1. Spanish rule (1521–1898)

Lapu-Lapu
Lapu-Lapu (1491–1542), whose name was first recorded as Çilapulapu, was
a datu (chief) of Mactan in the Visayas in the Philippines. He is best known for
the Battle of Mactan that happened at dawn on April 27, 1521, where he and his
warriors defeated the Spanish forces led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand
Magellan and his native allies Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula.

Jose Rizal
José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861 – December 30,
1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the end of
the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is considered the national hero
of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer and a
key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political
reforms for the colony under Spain.

2. American rule (1898–1946)

Emilio Aguinaldo
Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy  (March 22, 1869 – February 6, 1964) was
a Filipino revolutionary, statesman, and military leader who is officially
recognized as the first and the youngest president of the Philippines (1899–1901)
and the first president of a constitutional republic in Asia. He led Philippine forces
first against Spain in the Philippine Revolution (1896–1898).

3. Japanese occupation (1941–1946)

Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur (26 January 1880 – 5 April 1964) was an American military
leader who served as General of the Army for the United States, as well as a field
marshal to the Philippine Army. He was Chief of Staff of the United States
Army during the 1930s, and he played a prominent role in the Pacific
theater during World War II. MacArthur received the Medal of Honor for his
service in the Philippines campaign. This made him along with his father Arthur
MacArthur Jr. the first father and son to be awarded the medal. He was one of only
five to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only one
conferred the rank of field marshal in the Philippine Army.

4. Philippine self-rule (1946–present)

Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr.

Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr.
( September 11, 1917 – September 28, 1989) was a Filipino politician,
lawyer, dictator who was the 10th president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986.
He ruled under martial law from 1972 until 1981 and kept most of his martial law
powers until he was deposed in 1986, branding his rule as "constitutional
authoritarianism" under his Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (New Society Movement).
One of the most controversial leaders of the 20th centur.

The pioneers of photography in the Philippines were Western photographers,

mostly from Europe. The practice of taking photographs and the opening of the
first photo studios in Spanish Philippines, from the 1840s to the 1890s, were driven
by the following reasons: photographs were used as a medium of news and
information about the colony, as a tool for tourism, as an instrument
for anthropology, as a means for asserting social status, as an implement for
historical documentation.
