What is Industrial Revolution?

The term “Industrial Revolution” is a concept and a development that has

fundamentally changed our society and economy. The word “development” indicates a major

alteration that occurs within a short time period which signifies a rapid and fundamental

change and there is no doubt that there are some tardiness in the context of “revolution”

Small scale organizations and craft studios or workshops are replaced as the revolution arises.

The new dawn was first recognized by the textile and pottery factories, then, the new

infrastructure of canals and railways has enabled distribution to be carried out efficiently.

This can be seen as the transition from industrious to industrial which sparks the start in the

development of both.

Thanks to the digitization of manufacturing, the community are in the midst of a

significant transition on a global scale which is known to be the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

This compelling transition represents the fourth transition that has occurred in the industry of

manufacturing that comes after the mechanization through water and steam power, mass

production and assembly line using electricity, the adoption of computers and automation

which were the first, second and third Industrial Revolution, respectively.

The first mechanical loom was dated back in year 1784, about 230 years ago and it

accelerated towards the end of the 18th century. The Second Industrial Revolution began at

early of 20th century which links to the name of icons such as Henry Ford and Frederick

Taylor in the introduction of conveyor belt in mass production. The Third Industrial

Revolution is the digital automation of production by means of electronics and it (Bloem et

al., 2014).
