Introductory Message

Welcome to Grade 7 Physical Education – Individual Sports (Athletics)

The Physical Learning Guide is a product of the collaborative efforts of the


Division of Iloilo Secondary MAPEH Teachers Association (DISMATA) and the Iloilo
Division MAPEH Coordinators Association (IDIMCA) writers, illustrators, layout artists,
reviewers, editors, and Quality Assurance Team from the Department of Education,
Schools Division of Iloilo. This is developed to guide you dear learning facilitators in
helping our learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum.

The Physical Learning Guide aims to guide our learners in accomplishing


activities at their own pace and time. This also aims to assist learners in developing and
achieving the lifelong learning skills while considering their needs and situations.

For learning facilitator:

The Physical Learning Guide is developed to address the current needs of the
learner to continue learning in the comforts of their homes or learning centers. As the
learning facilitator, make sure that you give them clear instructions on how to study and
accomplish the given activities in the material. Learner’s progress must be monitored.

needs to continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material aims to

BEGIN

What kind of sports are you involved in right now, or are interested in getting
involved soon? Why? Is it because you want to become good in sports? Are you after
recreation and enjoyment? Or are you after the physical benefits sports bring?
Sports participation may be due to many different reason; but whatever reason
are for engaging in or being interested in engaging in sports, sports bring along
numerous benefits especially to your health. These benefits cannot be overemphasized,
for the benefits of sports participation go a long way.

Athletics

History and Nature

Athletics contests in running, walking, jumping, and throwing are among the oldest sports and
their roots are prehistoric. Athletics events were depicted in the Ancient Egyptian tombs in Saqqara,
with illustrations of running at the Heb Sed festival and high jumping appearing in tombs from as early
as of 2250 BC. The original and only event at the first Olympics in 776 BC was a stadium-length running
event known as the stadium. This later expanded to include throwing and jumping events within the
ancient pentathlon. Athletics competitions also took place at other Pan Hellenic Games, which were
founded later around 500 BC. Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve
competitive running, Jumping, throwing, and walking. The International Association of Athletics
Federation (IAAF), the sport’s governing body for the sports of athletic was founded on July 17, 1912.
At Stockholm, Sweden. Athletics in five disciplines: track and field, road running, race walking, cross
country running, and mountain running. All forms of athletics are individual sports with the exception of
relay races.

Glossary

The following terms used in this module are defined as follows:

Athletics- is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping,


throwing, and walking.
Combined Events- are competitions in which athletes participate in a number of track and
field events, earning points for their performance in each event, which adds to a total
points score. Most common combined events are the men’s decathlon and women’s
heptathlon.
Decathon -for Men. These includes 100m , long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m.,110m
hurdles, discus throw, Pole vault, javelin, 1500m
Heptathlon-for Women These includes100m. hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m, long
jump, Javelin and 800m

IAAF- (International Association of Athletics Federation) International governing body for


athletics.
Jumping Events- These includes long jump, high jump, triple jump, and pole vault.
