Lesson Plan for the week of February 6 - 10, 2023

Grade: One

Day One

Strand: Word Recognition and Fluency

Attainment Targets: Develop phonic awareness and use knowledge of letter sound
correspondences in order to decode unfamiliar words.

Objectives: Students should be able to

Blend phonemes to form words.

Segment words into their constituent parts and blend to form words.

Content: Phonics blending is a way for students to decode words. With phonics blending,
students fluently join together the individual sound-spellings (also called letter-sound
correspondence) in a word. With a word like jam, students start by sounding out each
individual sound-spelling (/j/, /ă/, /m/).

Resource materials: Youtube video, word cards, story, worksheet

Engage:

The students will look carefully at a list of nonsense words examples: mit, weg, mep. They
will segment the words into sounds and then blend them together.

Explore:

The students will practice segmenting and blending sounds to make words by watching the

They will watch the video twice; they will make a list of real words while watching the video
for the second time.

Explain:
The students will write their real words on paper and any errors will be addressed at this time.
They will give other words and continue segmenting and blending sounds.

Extent:

Blend and segment the words from the list: hat, cat, pig, pan, hot, ran, man, Ted, swim,
Jan and sit.

Read the tongue twister from the white board.

Day Two

Strand: Grammar and Conventions

Attainment target: Write sentences which are grammatically correct.

Objective: Students should be able to:

Use appropriate verbs to make simple sentences using SJE and JC.

Content:

Verbs are action words. Tells what someone or something is doing. Examples, run, jump,
play, talk and write.

Key Vocabulary: , verbs

Resource materials: picture, Slides,

Engage:

Short discussion on and verbs and students will give examples of each. Verbs are action
words it tell what the person is doing walk, run, jump, skip, and talk etc. Teachers and
students will sing this is the way I comb my hair, ask what the action is. This is the way I
jump up high. Ask the students what is the verb in the song.

Explore:

Students will view and identify the verbs from the picture. The words will be recorded on the
on the white board.
Explain:

The students will use the verbs to make sentences which the teacher will record on the white
board.. Example: The children fly the kites. Students and teacher will read the sentences
together.

Extent:

Now students will get opportunities to share their own experiences of going to the beach or
emancipation park. The students will share what they do there. Teacher will record the verbs
from then students’ experiences. Students will do the actions for each word..

information and identify ideas and events.

Objective: Students should be able to:

Identify story elements; setting and characters.

Content:

The setting is where and when the events of the story take place.

The characters are the people or animals in the story.

The characters can be real or fictional.

Key Vocabulary: setting, characters, story, events, place, people, animals


Resource materials: Youtube video

Engage:

The students will recall the meaning of the words setting and characters. Setting is the time
and place where the story takes place. While characters are the people, animals or creatures in
the story.

Explore/Explain:

Look and read the sentences to find the setting of each setting.

We went to the beach on a Sunday afternoon with my mother.

The boys went to school early in the morning.

Look and read the sentences to find the characters of each story.

Ted heard a loud sound coming from the kitchen.

Day 4

Strand: Writing and Speaking and Listening

Communicate with confidence and competence for different purposes and audiences, using
SJE and JC appropriately and creatively.

Use language and text forms appropriately and with imagination to create vibrant and
engaging texts.

Objectives: Students should be able to:


Write multiple sentences to support the main idea of the story.

Describe incidents and tell stories from their own experiences.

CONTENT

A sentence completes a full thought. A phrase is an incomplete thought.

Resource Materials: pictures

Engage :

The students will view a variety of pictures from story books.

Teacher and students will tell what they see and what they think is happening. They will also
tell the setting and characters from the picture story.

Teacher will allow students to share similar experiences, if any.

They will go on to read the story from the integrated reader. From it they will name the
characters.

Explain:

Students will be selected to help make sentences for each of the pictures on the slides. The
teacher will use the “Think Aloud” method while writing with students. Students can type
sentences in the chat as well. Teacher will explain that when we are making a sentence, we
must know that a sentence expresses a full thought, which means it is complete. A phrase is
not complete thought, it means the sentence is incomplete.

Explore:

The students will then listen to a variety of sentences and tell if they seem complete or
incomplete.

Extend:

Students will the go on to read the sentences to read. They will tick if it tells a complete
thought or not.
