Technical Description of Debris Ballast Hopper Car


1. General
WY-130 Debris Ballast Hopper Car is mainly used for storage, convey and transportation

of ballast or foul during track bed maintenance work.

 Self-propelled

 Hydraulic driven floor conveyor and slewing conveyor

 Four-axle bogie
When the hopper car is connected in front of ballast undercutter, one tail car needs to be
connected as shown in drawing below:

3. Configurations

The car is mainly composed of underframe, storage hopper, four-axle bogie, power unit,

brake system, electrical and control system, hydraulic system, coupler and draft gear, floor

conveyor, slewing conveyor and ballast distribution device, etc.

3.1. Underframe

A whole block spatial truss outline is formed by underframe, bracket of floor conveyor as

well as the storage hopper skeleton, which has large loading area and adequate strength,

rigidity. It consists of traction sill, corbel, side sill, horizontal connection beam and upper side

bearing, etc. Such structure has gone through finite element analysis to get to an optimum

design, to the maximum extent reducing tare weight and increasing loading capacity, thus

ensure economy of product.

The underframe is composed of middle sill, side sill, horizontal connection beam and

upper side bearing, etc.

The introduced metal of underframe is Q345B low-alloy steel.

3.2. Storage hopper

The storage hopper is a materials loading area that is composed of skeleton baffles at

both sides and the floor conveyor. With the materials storage corners ensured, the maximum

loading volume is 70m3.

The storage hopper is made by anti-climate steels and welded with rectangular steel

tubes and steel plates.

At the inner side of storage hopper, macromolecule wear liner is provided to increase the

wear resistance function of inner wall of hopper.

3.3. Bogie

The introduced four-axle bogie brings perfect running stability and reliability.

The frame of bogie is made by integral welded mode. Introduced material is Q345B

low-alloy steel.

The cleaner is fitted with HES wheel with axle load 25t. Introduced bearing is SKF

bearing. The tread of wheel and tread width, as well as inner side distance between wheels are

all designed as per Brazil CVRD Company stipulations.

3.4. Power unit

The power unit mainly consists of engine and pump station to supply power for

hydraulic system.

3.4.1. Diesel engine

The diesel engine made by US. CATERPILLAR Company is equipped with reliable

performance and easy maintenance characteristics. The parameters for engine are:

Mode six cylinders in line, turbocharged (air-to-air) aftercooled

Rated power/speed 168kW/2200rpm

Peak torque/speed 1028N.m/1400rpm

Engine exhausting is located on the top of the wagon, exhausting pipe and silencer are

made by stainless steel.

The under-suspended fuel tank, capacity is 1600L, is able to guarantee the wagon

working more than 50 hours with 70% load.

The fuel-feeding inlet is designed as per CVRD Company’s requirement.

3.4.2. Pump station

Original imported pump station made by German STIEBEL Company will be installed.

The pump station can conveyor large power and torque, with tight structure, directly

connected with engine flywheel, and flywheel housing. It is designed with three oil pump

driving interfaces.

3.5. Brake system

Brake system mainly consists of air brake system and hand brake device.

Air brake is composed by brake hose connector, angle cock, 103 type distribution valve,

auxiliary air reservoir, working reservoir, brake cylinder, centrifugal dust collector, cutoff

cock and emergency brake valve, etc.

The basic brake riggings introduces tread-unit brake cylinder made by Faiveley

Company, in which four cylinders are set with hand brake.

3.6. Electrical system

Electrical system mainly includes engine control, controls for power supply, illumination

of whole wagon as well as creeping travel control. It works under DC24V power.

The machine is equipped with power converter that can convert the DC24V into DC12V

to supply power for ATC system, radio and independent charger. The capacity and load of the

power request shall be provided by the user.

240V, 60Hz stabilizing power outlets is provided inside driving cabin to allow the use of

portable computers.

Power outlets in the cabins, with NBR 14.136 type plugs.

The logic control of the whole wagon is carried out by PLC controller covering:

over-heat stop protection for hydraulic oil tank, interlocking of rotary direction and position

of slewing conveyor and emergency stop control etc.

3.6.1. Engine control and power supply

Debris Ballast Hopper Car is installed with a set of 24V battery to supply power for

engine start and during short period after engine stops. After the engine starts, a DC generator

will supply power and charge the battery, forming main power source of the wagon, after that

supply to each power circuit.

3.6.2. Illuminations

The working illumination is set in every working area to enable sufficient illumination in

night working.

Working lights and rotating alarm light are provided.

3.6.3. Working control

The control system on each car controls start, stop of local floor conveyor and slewing

conveyor as well as the speed adjustment of the local floor conveyor. The emergency stop

button can be pushed to stop the whole train. The button is mounted on movable control box.

The centralized control function can set one car as control car as will, and control

working mechanisms of three cars. It can also be towed by other machines and controlled, as

ballast cleaner etc, in case of mantle relevant controller beforehand on these machines.

The items that can be controlled for Ballast Hopper Wagon from other machines (or

other Ballast Hopper Wagons coupled) include the followings:

(1) emergency stop;

(2) start and stop of floor conveyor;

(3) start and stop of slewing conveyor.

3.7. Hydraulic system

Hydraulic system mainly consists of floor conveyor driven hydraulic system, slewing

conveyor driven hydraulic system, conveyor slewing hydraulic system and creeping travel

hydraulic system, etc. Each hydraulic oil pump is installed on the pump drive that connects

with the engine directly.

The driven motor of floor conveyor is capacity-timing loop comprising one set of

electrical proportion variable pump and four sets of variable motors. It can realize stepless

timing of floor conveyor by means of navigating timing rotary button.

The slewing conveyor is introduced with the loop comprising ration pump and

low-speed/high torque ration motor. The moving speed of conveyor is not adjustable.

The right/left 45º swing and incline adjusting of slewing conveyor is enabled by

hydraulic cylinder.

The hydraulic system is set with radiator for hydraulic oil comprising oil pump and

ration motor.

The hydraulic components are introduced with SAUER and Parker production.

The obligated outer power input connect-plug on hydraulic system can drive operation

mechanism by outer source power while engine is stopped. Under above condition, the

working efficiency and performance is affected by flux and pressure of outer source power.

3.8.Coupler and draft gear

The fitted coupler and draft gear accord with the requirement of Brazil CVRD Company.

3.9.Floor conveyor

The floor conveyor is arranged at the bottom of storage hopper. Head and tail driven

chain wheel is equipped. And double side roller chain driven is introduced between the chain

wheels.

The conveyor is fitted with four sets of driven motors and decelerators. Hydraulic motor

and retard driven is introduced. Such design can ensure the floor conveyor normal start and

running under maximum loading condition.

Main technical data is as follows:

Band speed scope 0~0.2m/s

The introduced NN300-6-(6+3)nylon-core conveyor is made by anti-wear, anti-oil

rubber. The longitudinal extension intensity of rubber band is 300N/mm, working surface

thickness is 6mm, and non-working surface thickness is 3mm.

The floor conveyor frame is made by Q345B low-alloy steel.

3.10. Slewing conveyor

The slewing conveyor is equipped at front end of the wagon, having the same structure

and driven mode as floor conveyor. With the slewing mechanism installed, the slewing

conveyor can rotate within the range of ±45°. The slewing mechanism is driven by hydraulic

cylinder. In case of any failure for the slewing mechanism, manual reset device can be available.

The slewing conveyor is introduced with the rubber band same as floor conveyor uses.

The slewing conveyor frame is made by Q345B low-alloy steel.

3.11. Safety measures

Both front and rear bogies are installed with axle box loading alarm detection device. In

case of overloading, visual and audible alarm can be given out. In this way wagon

overloading can be effectively avoided to ensure running safety.

3.12. Painting

High quality NIPPON polyurethane painting will be used, which has good weatherproof

feature, hard film, excellent acid and alkali resisting, solvent resisting and humidity proof

performance. Standard painting scheme of the wagon shall be yellow chassis and car body

while black running gear.

4. Main functions and characteristics

4.1. Functions

● Materials storage and transportation function.

● Ballast discharging function, in two modes: independent discharging and uniform

discharging

● The slewing conveyor is equipped with slewing mechanism to ensure curve

negotiation in train formation.

● Form into ballast cleaning train set together with ballast cleaning machine to realize

foul ballast collection function for track bed cleaning.

● Working with ballast cleaning machine to realize ballast changing or cleaning,

supplementing of track bed.

4.2. Characteristics

● Overall vehicle is designed with finite-element analysis optimized design. Decreasing

tare weight and increasing loading capacity to the maximal extent, i.e. increasing the

materials loading capacity to the maximal extent; in this way make the wagon more

applicable and valuable.

● Floor conveyor and slewing conveyor have a good performance for heavy loading

startup. These two conveyors have adequate over loading performance.


● The wagon has a high transportation efficient which can reach to 900m3/h.
● Axle box loading alarm detection device is provided to effectively avoid overloading

and ensure running safety.


● Main parts are interchangeable and integrated into series.
