This Self Learning Kit is prepared for the learners to enhance their
understanding, knowledge and abilities for the particle nature of matter.
The activities are given to strengthen knowledge and understanding about
the concept particularly on the properties of matter based on their particulate nature.
This Self Learning Kit is divided into three:
I. What Happened? (Do You Matter?) wherein the learners will be able to classify the
different pictures whether it is matter or not.
II. What I Need to Know? (What’s the matter?) The part where the learners will be able
to explained the learning competency enclosed.
III. What I have Learned? Where the learners be able to enhance their understanding,
abilities and knowledge about the learning competency in explaining the properties of
solids, liquids and gases based on the particle nature of matter.
The learners are expected to develop their knowledge and abilities and be able to
apply this in their daily life activities.
How will you learn from this Self-learning Kit?

Before going through this SLK prepare and do your

2
 Explain the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases based on the
particle nature of matter
As you go through with this Self-learning kit, you should be able to:
1. classify the given matters into solid, liquid, or gas;
2. describe the common properties of each phase of matter; and
3. infer from observations that matter move.

Before you explore and discover

the hidden treasures of matter, it is
best to take the pretest below first.
Get your pen and notebook and
answer now.

1. According to the kinetic-molecular theory, which substances are made up

of particles?
A. liquids only
B. gases only
C. all matter
D. all matter except solids
2. Which of the following BEST explains why orange juice is a liquid and not a
solid?
A. It has a bright color.
B. It has molecules that are packed tightly together.
C. It takes the shape of its container
D. You cannot weigh it on a scale.

3. Matter in a solid state has ______ volume and ______ shape.
A. a definite, a definite
B. a definite, no definite
C. no definite, a definite
D. no definite, no definite
4. According to the kinetic-molecular theory, particles of matter ______________.
A. are always fluid
B. are in constant motion
C. have different colors
D. have different shapes
5. Any sample of matter has mass and takes up space. The main reason for this is
because:
A. All matter is heavy
B. Matter can be a gas
C. Matter is made up of tiny particles that have mass and take up space
D. The Earth is made of matter

Hello!
Did you get a high score? Congratulations!
If you have low score, it’s okay, don’t be
sad. I was just testing your knowledge about
the properties of matter. As you go through
with this Self-learning Kit, you will be able to
deepen your understanding about it. Now,
let’s interpret your score.

If you got 3 or below, you really need to study the module. Pay
attention to all the items you did get correctly.

If you got 4, it means that it is easier for you to study the

module and I hope you will get a perfect score in the post test.

If you got a perfect score, you’re very good. You may not need
to study the module anymore but it would be better for you to
go on because you might discover more interesting things
about matter.

4
I. Do You Matter?
(Classifying and Describing Matter)
Objectives:
 Classify the given matters into solid, liquid, or gas.
 Describe the common properties of each phase of
matter.
 Infer from observations that matter move.

SOLID LIQUID GAS

Questions
1. What is matter made up of?
___________________________________________________________________
2. What are the common properties of solid, liquid, and gas?

___________________________________________________________________
3. Are the particles of matter moving? What is between them?
___________________________________________________________________

5
II. What I Need To Know? (What’s the Matter?)

In this lesson we must learned

that the particle nature of matter
such as solid, liquid and gas has
the following properties:
1. Matter is made up of tiny
particles.
2. The particles have
spaces in between them
which is called VOID.
3. The particles are moving
all the time
4. The particles of matter
attract each other.

Now it’s time to learn

more about it!

INTRODUCTION
All matter is a particulate in nature. This simply means that the matter is made
up of tiny particles known as particles. The idea was first conceived by Democritus,
a Greek philosopher. He named the particle as atom, from the Greek word “atomos,”
meaning indivisible.
However, scientific advances show that there are smaller particles making up
each atom. Nevertheless, atom remains the most stable and convenient way to
understand and discuss the nature of matter, especially because it is the smallest
particle that can enter into a chemical combination.
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Mass is the
fundamental property of matter. It remains constant for any proportion of matter that
remains the same. The relationship between the amount of mass and the amount of
space is an important property of matter.

PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Objectives:
 Classify the given matters into solid, liquid, gas.
 Describe the common properties of each phases of matter.
 Infer from observations that matter move.

Let’s do this!
Consider the Particle Model of Matter below in describing the different properties of
solid, liquid and gas

Properties Solid Liquid Gas

Shape (definite/indefinite)
Volume (definite/indefinite)
Arrangement of particles
Attraction between particles
(very strong, strong, weak)

The three states of matter are the three distinct physical forms
that matter can take in most environments: Solid, Liquid, Gas. These
three distinct physical forms are all made up of microscopic particles,
but the behavior of these particles differ in the three phases.
Solid particles have definite shape, it is tightly packed together,
arranged in regular patterns, and vibrate in a fixed position.
Liquid particles have no definite shape, farther apart and are
not in any pattern and move and slide over each other.
Gas particles have no definite shape. Its particles also far apart
and move freely.

ASSESSMENT 3: FILL ME UP!

DIRECTIONS: Fill in the blank with the most appropriate word to come up with the
Kinetic Molecular Theory that describes the Particle Nature of Matter.

1. Matter is made up of tiny ______________________.

2. Particles of matter are ________________________ all the time.
3. These particles have _________________________ between them.
4. The particles of matter ________________________ each other.
