Single Phase Full Wave Uncontrolled and Controlled Rectifier

Aim: To design and implement Single Phase Full Wave Uncontrolled and Controlled
rectifiers, and simulate them with R and RL loads.

Software Used: MATLAB 2022b

Theory: A full-wave rectifier converts the AC input waveform to DC Output Waveform of

constant polarity (either positive or negative). Full wave rectifiers can be controlled or
uncontrolled, depending on whether the diodes or thyristors are used in its construction.
An uncontrolled full wave rectifier uses 4 diodes in its bridge configuration, while a
controlled full wave rectifier uses 4 thyristors, which are provided by triggering pulses at
their gates.

Theoretical Calculations:

For an R load, average output voltage and current for a controlled full wave rectifier are
given by:

Where α is the firing angle of the thyristor. For uncontrolled rectifiers, the thyristor is
replaced by a diode, and α = 0.

Considering an AC source with RMS voltage of 230V and a resistive load of 10Ω;

For a single-phase full wave uncontrolled rectifier

Vo = 207.07V; Io = 20.707A

For a single-phase full wave-controlled rectifier with α = 30◦ ;Vo = 193.2V; Io = 19.32A

Result:
1. As the load is resistive in nature, the output current is in phase with output
voltage. Due to full rectification of input AC signal, the output DC signal has
twice the frequency of the input signal. The DC Output Power and
efficiency of full wave uncontrolled rectifier with R Load is 4220 W and
89.32% respectively.

Result:

1. The circuit does not produce any output voltage, till firing pulses are given to the
thyristor gates. Upon triggering, the circuit imitates a full bridge uncontrolled
rectifier. The DC Output Power and efficiency of full wave uncontrolled rectifier with
R Load is 3680 W and 83.41% respectively.
2. Due to the inductive nature of the load, output current lags output voltage.
The DC Output Power and efficiency of full wave uncontrolled rectifier with
R Load is 3499 W and 81.33% respectively.

Conclusion:
The design of single-phase full wave rectifiers, both controlled and uncontrolled,
with R and RL loads were implemented successfully in MATLAB using Simulink. The
output waveforms for voltage and current were obtained in each case, and a
comparison between theoretically calculated and simulated output parameter
values was also performed.
