COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Daily tasks such as scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports and
correspondence are an important administrative aspect of a medical practice. Computer facility is necessary in order to
perform these jobs quickly and accurately. This introductory course is designed to help you attain essential technology
literacy and competence with productivity applications. You will first learn the basic computer principles: computer
functions, and the hardware and software that support them. Also, you will explore Web-based productivity tools that
are utilized for collaboration in the workplace Finally, you will build and reinforce proficiency and efficiency with
productivity programs included in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel).

LEARNING GOALS AND OUTCOMES:


Upon completion of this course, you will gain the following computer competencies:
Foundations
• Define and describe basic computer functions and computer hardware that support them
• Perform basic computer system operations such as log on, shut down, start programs, and file management
• Define computer networks and describe their purposes; and understand general principles of data communication
Productivity Applications:
• Demonstrate proficiency and efficiency with productivity applications inside MS Office Suite such as Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint
• Demonstrate proficiency creating and sharing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and files using cloud-based
tools and environments (Google Suite)

• Students who do not have Gmail accounts are required to create one for this course.

USB FLASH DRIVE (8GB minimum) - optional for remote instruction. Additional content and practice assignments
will be posted on Schoology, BEOC’s learning management platform ( www.schoology.com). Details on how access
materials from Schoology will be explained to students during the first week of class.

COURSE STRUCTURE:
This course will be delivered in-person on site at BEOC. All the content will be organized and delivered through the
learning management system Schoology. To login to Schoology, you will use your email address and Schoology
password (sunybeoc).

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS


• Lectures and Demonstrations to explore and learn specific concepts and skills during our scheduled live online
sessions. Take careful notes during our lessons as not all material can be found in the texts or readings.
Participation in discussion is highly encouraged.
• Assignments: practices and projects to help support and supplement material covered during the lectures and
demonstrations. YOU WILL SUBMIT ALL ASSIGNMENTS VIA SCHOOLOGY.
• Exams: to evaluate proficiency and competence with learned material

MAKE-UP POLICY:
• To receive full credit, out-of-class assignments are expected to be submitted via Schoology on or before the
deadline. If submitted one (1) day after due date, grade will be lowered by 10%. If homework is submitted two (2)
days after due date, grade will be lowered by 20%. If homework is submitted three (3) days after due date, student
will receive a zero (0) grade.

• MAKE-UP FOR MAJOR TESTS LIKE MIDTERM AND FINAL MAY BE OFFERED AT THE
INSTRUCTOR’S DISCRETION BASED ON PRESENTED VALID DOCUMENTATION THAT EXPLAINS
THE REASON FOR THE ABSENCE.

ATTENDANCE CRITERIA:
You are required to attend all classes as scheduled. All absences are recorded and count towards the absence limit,
which is 20% of instructional time in each course. All late arrivals and early departures are also recorded. Since
attendance and participation contribute to midterm and final grades, students with excessive absences may receive
lower grades. To be considered attending a student must participate for the full length of sessions conducted
in Conferences.

“OUT-OF-CLASS” WORK POLICY
Study time beyond the scheduled lecture sessions is essential for achieving your learning goals for this class. Out-of-
class work refers to self-directed learning activities (homework) such as reading assignments, research activities and
projects, quiz/exam preparation, projects (individual), written assignments (papers and essays), knowledge checks and

self-assessments, etc. We encourage that you spend two hours of self-directed studying for each hour of teacher-
lead instruction.

NETIQUETTE
The term “netiquette” refers to the appropriate behavior guidelines students should follow in an online course. In an
online classroom, the primary means of communication is written, and at times verbal communication in a live lecture.
It is important to maintain civility in discussions, and other forms of electronica or audio communication. Please be
aware of the possibility of miscommunication due to the scarcity of non-verbal cues and compose your comments in a
positive, supportive, and constructive manner.
