TESTING SPEAKING SKILLS

Speaking is the most difficult language skill to assess because it is a complex skill. Speaking test
is concerned with informal mode of language use. Five components usually tested in speaking:
1. Pronunciation
2. Grammar
3. Vocabulary
4. Fluency
5. Comprehension
One of the problems in speaking ability is pronunciation which is comprehensibility only or with
both phonemic and allophonic accuracy.
Item types:
1. Testing Pronunciation: includes of pronouncing words in isolation and words in sentences,
reading aloud, and re-telling story.
2. Oral interview with the procedures:
- Start with personal details such as name, address, and hobbies.
- Questioning which is like the interview from becoming an interrogation.
- Marking, it can be deal when the student has left the room. Because they should be
constantly reassured that what you say is being treated as important.
